Reporting to the Supervisor - Traffic Signal and Street Light Maintenance, the Traffic Signal & Street Light Technician is responsible for work related to the installation, inspection, repair, operation and day to day maintenance of all infrastructure associated with the Municipality’s traffic signal and street light network including, but not limited to, traffic signals, signal controllers, pedestrian signals, vehicle detection, street light fixtures, smart nodes, etc.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Receives assignment and direction from the Supervisor – Traffic Signal & Street Light Maintenance for daily repair, testing, installation, inspection and scheduled maintenance.
- Performs repairs, testing and installations of all electrical and solid state traffic controllers and signal equipment including annual inspections;
- Work around high voltage utility systems and underground 600 volts systems
- Performs commissioning testing, installation, troubleshooting, maintenance repair of various streetlight and Traffic components, including but not limited to light fixtures, smart nodes, relays, access points, power enclosures, traffic signal displays, signal pre-emption, vehicle detection systems, accessible pedestrian signals (APS), rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB), RA-5 crosswalks, conflict monitors, etc.
- Review reported failures and deficiencies in the traffic signal and street light system, prioritize and respond accordingly, ensuring compliance with the HRM service standard for emergency traffic signal and street light repairs;
- Maintains accurate and up to date records of all work completed and equipment used to ensure accurate inventory of equipment is maintained through tracking of materials / equipment in maintenance activities;
- Execute repair of all electrical traffic signal and street light equipment and ensure all equipment is properly tested and in good working order before field installation;
- Responsible to carry out underground locates, including emergency locates, to identify underground traffic signal and street light infrastructure;
- Review and provide input into projects related to installation / modification of traffic signal and street lighting infrastructure to ensure compliance with HRM specifications and Canadian Electrical Code;
- Undertake inspection of capital projects involving installation / modification of traffic signal and street light infrastructure to ensure compliance with HRM specifications and applicable codes;
- Carries out preventative maintenance activities for traffic signal and street light infrastructure;
- Keeps an updated record of safety training courses (including fall arrest, first aid, forklift, confined space, traffic control and IMSA courses);
- Work with the fire department to maintain traffic signal emergency pre-emption systems;
- Maintains safe and clean work environment by complying with all procedures, rules and regulations;
Education & Experience:
- Certified Red Seal Electrician;
- IMSA Level I & II Traffic Signals Certification or ability to obtain within 1 year of date of hire;
- IMSA Level I Street Lighting Certification or ability to obtain with 1 year of date of hire;
- Experience with street lights and power enclosures considered an asset;
- Experience with traffic signal systems considered an asset;
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical codes, drawings and schematics;
- Experience in municipal works in the areas of traffic signals and street lighting;
- Familiar with street light systems and underground wiring installations;
- Familiar with various types of traffic signal controller equipment;
- Proficiency with various computer programs used for testing / diagnostics of traffic signal and street lighting equipment;
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and develop effective interpersonal relationships;
- Experience with electrical and electronics, specifically related to control systems;
- Demonstrated traffic signalization and street lighting knowledge, an asset;
- Certification in Traffic Control Person, Temporary Workplace Signing, Fall Protection, First Aid and WHIMIS or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment;
- Bucket truck and bucket evacuation training or ability to obtain within 1 year from date of hire;
- Must have a valid NS driver’s license with a good driving record upon hire and the ability to obtain a Class 3 license within 1 year of date of hire.
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Permanent, Full-Time
HOURS OF WORK: Regular hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. for 35 hours per week. This position is required to work overtime and participate in a rotating on-call schedule for weekday evenings and weekends.
SALARY: Level 8 - $39.63 per hour as per the NSGEU Local 222 Collective Agreement
