MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under the supervision of a registered professional nurse, the OR Assistant provides support services that include but limited to general nursing care and other tasks that support clinical operations of the operating rooms Post Anesthesia Recovery Room. I.e. running errands, transporting patients, prepping, shaving, positioning of patients. Obtains special equipment for procedures and perform the cleaning of the operating rooms and surrounding areas.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Room Prep:

  • Assists with case set up to include: Obtaining necessary equipment, sterile supplies, and positioning aids for schedule cases according to the preference card. 
  • ·         Checks equipment for safe operations prior to use to ensure patient safety.
  • Inventories and stocks operating rooms with supplies as assigned.
  • ·         Checks and restocks all solutions carts/warmers, plaster cart, rotates supplies as needed
  • Returns the sterile supplies and equipment to appropriate area utilizing approved transport methods.

Procedure Assistance:

  • Picks and/or completes picking up supplies for cases utilizing computer generated pick lists or preference cards. 
    • Anticipates and obtains needed equipment for assigned procedure, sets up and pre check for proper function. The equipment includes but not limited to microscopes, video towers, video cameras, and fracture table.
    • Routinely inspects and maintains awareness of equipment and safety hazards to prevent equipment damage or harm to patient.
  • Provides assistance to the circulating nurse when the operative site is being prepped by supporting extremity, or pouring of prep solutions while maintaining aseptic technique.  
    • ·         Assists with between case clean up and preparation of set-up for following cases, working to insure a safe patient environment. 

Transport:

  • Provides patient transport throughout the surgical suite.
  • Assists with transferring, positioning, and lifting patients from the stretcher/bed at the beginning and end of procedures as directed by the RN.
  • When requested, assist the nurse and anesthesiologist with transporting of patient to Recovery Room.

Cleaning:

  • ·         Assists with cleaning and movement of furniture, equipment and floors, as needed. Utilizes universal precautions. 
  • ·         Assists with clean up and disposition of used instruments and equipment. 
  • ·         Perform room turnover within accepted time frame, functioning as a team member.
  • ·         Cleans all designated supply areas and equipment as assigned by following infection control guidelines and departmental policies and procedures.
  • ·         Maintain general cleaning and organization of the perioperative area to include OR rooms, Hallways, sub sterile areas, scrub sinks and all items to be stored.
  • ·         When an anesthesia technician is not available, performs between case cleaning of anesthesia equipment, and monitor changing the circuits, assures availability of laryngoscope blades, handles, LMA’s, etc. for the anesthesiologists
  • Provides a safe, therapeutic environment for patient and families. 

General:

  • Participates in training of new personnel.
  • ·         Attends staff development activities including staff meetings and in services. 
  • ·         Works efficiently with Perioperative Staff in a variety of surgical procedures done in the OR.
  • ·         Answers telephone in a prompt and courteous manner, addressing callers and patients appropriately by name and/or title.
  • ·         Performs efficiently in crisis and emergency situations, following established protocols, remaining calm and informing appropriate persons.
  • ·         Demonstrates good use of personal protective equipment and universal precautions.
  • ·         All other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education (Indicate minimum education or degree required.)

  • H.S Graduate                                        

Preferred Education (Indicate preferred education or degree required.)

  •  

Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications (Indicate minimum years of job experience, skills or abilities required for the job.)

  • One year of clinical experience in an acute care hospital as transportation or environmental serve technician

Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications (Indicate preferred years of job experience, skills or abilities required for the job.)

1 year Operating room experience preferred

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation (List any licensure or certification required and specify name of agency.)

  • American Heart Association BLS Card
  • Current Los Angeles County Fire Card (or must be obtained within 30 days of hire)
  • Assault Response Competency (ARC) required (within 30 days of hire)
