Duties & Responsibilities

As a member of the Office of Institutional Research and Decision Support, this position supports the development and maintenance of data pipelines and data integration processes for the university’s reporting and analytics needs. The position focuses on building technical solutions to extract, transform, and load (ETL) data from institutional systems, ensuring data integrity and supporting the enterprise data warehouse initiative. Working under the mentorship of the Business Intelligence (BI) Director, the individual will contribute to the HelioCampus data warehouse implementation, assist in coding and automating data flows, and help document technical processes in alignment with institutional data governance standards.

This is a hands-on, growth-oriented, technical role ideal for a data professional early in their career who wants to advance their skills in data engineering and warehousing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain data extraction and transformation processes using SQL, SAS and other ETL tools.
  • Assist with coding and automation of data pipelines feeding BI dashboards and reporting solutions.
  • Support HelioCampus data warehouse implementation, including data mapping, validation, and testing.
  • Learn and assist with SAS DI Studio and SAS Visual Analytics under the guidance of the BI Director.
  • Document technical workflows, data definitions, and transformation rules to support data governance initiatives.
  • Collaborate with IRDS and IT colleagues to troubleshoot data issues and ensure accuracy in reporting datasets.
  • Provide occasional support for dashboard maintenance and troubleshooting when required.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, datascience, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Proficiency in SQL and familiarity with relational databases
  • Exposure to data integration or ETL processes
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn new coding tools and methods
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and interest in data management
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with SAS programming, SAS DI Studio, SAS Visual Analytics, or other ETL/reporting platforms. -
  • Exposure to data warehouse projects or cloud-based data environments
  • Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python or R
  • Experience working with data from enterprise systems (e.g., Banner or similar)
  • Interest in developing into a senior data engineering or warehouse development role.
