Assistant, Associate or Full Professor; nine-month tenure-track appointment beginning Fall Semester, August 1, 2026. Salary and fringe benefits are competitive and commensurate with rank and experience. 

 

The University of Tennessee's Natalie L. Haslam College of Music is seeking a dynamic music educator to join our faculty. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a collaborative spirit, bring expertise in elementary/general music education and contribute to our undergraduate and graduate music education offerings, including a forthcoming online graduate degree in music education. The candidate should also work collaboratively with other College of Music faculty to sustain and support the music education program, maintain a research/creative/scholarly activity profile commensurate with appointed rank, and demonstrate a commitment to forward-thinking curriculum development, innovation, and community engagement.    

 

Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in elementary music education, leading graduate courses in areas of expertise, coordinating field experience internships, and supervising student teachers/interns. The successful candidate will actively participate in professional development for elementary/general music educators, develop regional and national visibility as an elementary/general music educator, and develop and maintain positive relationships with inservice music educators. The candidate is also expected to serve on graduate committees and participate in various education and professional development opportunities including TMEA (ETGMEA), ACDA, CNAfME, and NAfME.

The University of Tennessee Natalie L. Haslam College of Music offers a broad and comprehensive professional music program at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. Required Qualifications

  1. Doctorate/PhD or ABD in music education or related area;
  2. At least three years of successful public school experience;
  3. An emerging and/or established (dependent on rank of appointment) record of research, presentations, or scholarly/creative activity;
  4. Demonstrated abilities in organization, communication and working effectively with faculty, students, colleagues, and administrators.  

Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor must:

  • Meet the qualifications for being an Assistant Professor within UTK’s faculty handbook and the NLH College of Music bylaws; these are covered in the above Required Qualifications.

Candidates for the rank of Associate Professor must:

  • Meet the qualifications for being an Associate Professor within UTK’s faculty handbook and the NLH College of Music bylaws; these qualifications normally include having served as an assistant professor for at least 5 years and having served as mentor to junior faculty.

Candidates for the rank of Full Professor must:

  • Meet the qualifications for being a Full Professor within UTK’s faculty handbook and the NLH College of Music bylaws; these qualifications normally include having served as an associate professor for at least 5 years and having served as mentor to junior faculty.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Successful teaching experience in a music teacher education program;
  2. Ability to lead classes in secondary general music or other specializations such as music technology or popular music pedagogy;
  3. Experience teaching graduate online music education courses;
  4. Experience with elementary music teaching methodologies.
