Primary Purpose of Position

The Surgical Technologist is an allied health professional who plays a critical role in supporting surgical teams by ensuring the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive procedures. Working under the supervision and delegatory authority of a surgeon, the Surgical Tech maintains a sterile environment, ensures equipment functionality, and facilitates optimal patient outcomes. This position may be located within Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs) and requires adherence to strict infection prevention and control practices. Personnel working at any sites are responsible for safe patient care and ensuring adherence to all Policies and Procedures.


Work Schedule/Duty Hours:  Day, evening, and night shifts needed. 


  

Core Duties

The list of core duties below is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed, as necessary.

· Prepare the operating room by setting up sterile fields, surgical trays, Mayo stands, and necessary instruments, supplies, and medications.

· Perform surgical scrubs and assist with gowning, gloving, draping, and positioning of patients and surgical team members.

· Maintain strict sterile technique throughout procedures; monitor and preserve the sterile field.

· Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and assist with instruments, retractors, robotic equipment, and endoscopic tools as directed.

· Perform and document surgical counts (sponges, instruments) and ensure all items are accounted for.

· Clean, inspect, and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization; assist with room turnover and restocking between cases.

· Support post-operative care by assisting with dressings and participating in debriefings and quality improvement activities.

· Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment by participating in or guiding environmental cleaning and equipment maintenance.

· Demonstrate strong critical thinking, communication, and organizational skills while working independently or collaboratively.

· Adhere to all infection control, HIPAA, and regulatory standards, including uniform and hygiene policies.

· Maintain professional appearance, punctuality, and a high level of customer service in all patient and team interactions.

· Use sound judgment in prioritizing tasks and solving problems in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.

· Perform other duties within scope of practice as assigned.



Essential Functions

Surgical Technologists are highly trained professionals who apply the principles of asepsis and sterile technique, combining their knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and medical technologies to support physicians during invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

The position requires a high level of operational excellence, particularly in infection prevention and control. Surgical Technologists must be adaptable, detail-oriented, and capable of working in environments with moderate noise levels and potential exposure to infectious diseases and blood-borne pathogens.


· Apply aseptic and sterile techniques to support safe and effective surgical procedures.

· Assist physicians by anticipating needs and managing surgical instruments and equipment.

· Maintain a clean, safe, and organized operating room environment.

· Demonstrate professionalism, critical thinking, and effective communication in high-pressure, fast-paced settings.

· Adhere to all applicable policies and regulations, including those set by Optum Serve, MTFs, HIPAA, OSHA, and The Joint Commission.

· Maintain a professional appearance and comply with uniform and hygiene standards, including infection control protocols (e.g., no artificial nails).

· Participate in infection prevention, quality assurance, and continuous improvement initiatives.

· Maintain punctuality, reliability, and flexibility in accordance with assigned schedules and operational demands.


Mental demands for the role include reading, writing, attention to detail, confidentiality, problem-solving, ad hoc decision-making skills, math skills, reasoning skills, oral communication, written communication, customer contact, multiple concurrent tasks, stress management skills, interpersonal skills.


Physical demands for the role include bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs., handling (holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with the hand or hands), fingering (picking, pinching, fine manipulation), sitting, standing for long periods of time, and walking. Seeing and hearing alarms and settings during and after business hours and responding according to training and procedures.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  

Education and Licensure

· Graduate from Surgical Technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or completion of a formal training program provided by any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, or Air Force) for surgical technicians, surgical technologists or operating room technicians. 


Certifications

· Certified as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or certified as a Tech-in-Surgery (TS-C) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or possess a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) certification as a surgical technician and/or operating room technician. 

· Basic Life Support (BLS) – required.

· Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – as required by the MTF.

· Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – as required by the MTF.


Experience

· Minimum of three(3) years of within the last five (5) years current exper[JA2] ience as a surgical technologist or operating room technician. The individual shall have one year of combined experience in Orthopedic, Spine, Neurosurgical, General Surgery, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Urology, Da Vinci Surgery, or a variety of surgical experience.


Citizenship

· Must be a United States Citizen


Preferred Qualifications

· Experience working with Veterans, Service Members, and Federal Employees.
