About the Department

Summary  

Under general supervision of the Director of Truck Driver Training, the TDT Instructor will supervise and train students in proper driving techniques and administer commercial driver's license (CDL) testing as a third-party examiner (if certified) for the State of North Carolina. The instructor will perform mainly instructional work; teaching classes, instructing students in school equipment, preparing class schedules, counseling and advising students, other duties as needed and required. This position requires flexibility for both weekend and weekday classes.

Position Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Reports directly to the Program Director, main duties are:  

  • Teach the prescribed course as outlined in the TDT Manual.
  • Prepare daily schedule for students and vehicles.
  • Maintain class records.
  • Evaluate the progress of each student in operation of highway and field vehicles. 
  • Motivate students and encourage safe driving habits.
  • Pickup and return vehicles to and from repair facilities and/or sites as needed. 
  • Investigate accidents involving our equipment.
  • Evaluate students on final road and field tests. 
  • Offer suggestions and participate in improvement of the Truck Driver Training program.
  • Take an active part in publicity and public relations, such as public school “Career Days” and Job Fairs. 
  • Assist, as requested and attend Truck Driver Training events when held at Johnston Community College.
  • Drive tractor-trailers for JCC to assist with special projects as required.
  • Participate in annual career development and stay abreast of changes in the trucking industry and/or government regulations concerning trucking. 
  • Work diligently with each student to promote completion of the program and determine they can drive a truck safely.
  • Act as Third Party Examiner for CDL (when certified)
Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has responsibility to oversee PT instructors.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education Minimum: High School Diploma or equivalent.


Education Preferred: None.


Experience Minimum: Three (3) years driving a commercial motor vehicle which required a Class A CDL to operate and one of the following: one (1) year as CDL driver trainer or graduate from North Carolina Truck Driver Training School.


Must possess a current CDL Class A License.


Experience Preferred: Five (5) years driving a commercial motor vehicle which required a Class A CDL to operate driving and one of the following: two (2) years as a CDL driver trainer or graduate of North Carolina Truck Driver Training School.


Successful Completion of: Road Test, written test, obstacle driving course, Pre-Trip/Post Trip inspection procedures, drug screen, and the ability to meet third party examiner requirements.

Language Skills 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.   
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
                       
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 
    
Reasoning Ability 
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused under extreme stress is required.
Computer Skills
  • Basic computer and keyboarding skills. 
 Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • CDL Class A License
