The Orthopedic Nurse Navigator is an advanced licensed RN who functions at the proficient level and is recognized as an expert in orthopedic specialty care. Provides direct patient care and serves as a clinical resource and advocate for patients undergoing joint replacement, spine surgery, and other orthopedic procedures. In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the RN facilitates coordination and continuity of care, promotes evidence-based practice, and supports safe transitions across the continuum. Assumes leadership responsibilities with contributions at the bedside, unit, service line, and institution-wide. May be involved in leading shared governance activities and coordinating patient and staff education in a hospital setting.
Responsibilities
- Serves as a clinical resource and patient advocate for individuals undergoing joint replacement, spine surgery, and other orthopedic procedures.
- Provides education to patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatments, surgical processes, rehabilitation, and home care.
- Collaborates with surgeons, physicians, nurses, physical therapists, care management, and other disciplines to coordinate seamless, evidence-based care throughout the perioperative continuum.
- Facilitates preoperative education, supports health optimization, and assists patients with medical and insurance clearance processes to ensure readiness for surgery.
- Conducts ongoing assessments, monitors progress, and addresses patient and family questions or concerns to promote safety, satisfaction, and positive outcomes.
- Guides patients in accessing hospital, community, and support resources, ensuring continuity of care beyond discharge.
- Partners with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and hospital leadership to improve patient experience, streamline discharge efficiency, and reduce readmissions.
- Leads or participates in quality and safety initiatives by collecting and analyzing data, auditing charts, and monitoring nurse-sensitive indicators to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Ensures accurate event reporting, investigates incidents, and promptly escalates high-risk situations to management and risk services.
- Participates in accreditation readiness activities and contributes to compliance with hospital, state, and national standards of care.
- Acts as a mentor and role model by coaching staff, students, and new employees; promotes interprofessional communication, shared governance, and team-based problem solving.
- Actively participates in hospital committees, work groups, and continuous improvement projects to advance orthopedic care and organizational goals.
- Demonstrates leadership in managing competing priorities, supporting workflow optimization, and contributing to fiscal responsibility within assigned areas.
- Performs other duties as assigned in alignment with hospital needs and professional nursing standards.
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required
CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:
- Current Texas Board of Nursing (or Compact State) RN license; Or a Temporary Texas RN License (Permanent TX license within 90 days upon hire).
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, within 7 days of hire.
