Description

Purpose: Beginning in early January through the first week in April, this long-term substitute position involves teaching all levels of Photography, including AP 2D Art & Design: Photo. He/she enjoys working with upper school students, grades 9-12, and has experience masterfully guiding them in the development of their photographic skills. The substitute will work closely with the Department Chair and promote the Visual Arts at ESD. The substitute will also serve as a 10th grade advisor, with the assistance of the grade level dean


Essential Functions:

  • Teach 4 sections of Photography in the Upper School, delivering instruction aligned with ESD’s Statement of Educational Philosophy.  
  • Provide support in gallery art installations and art events. 
  • Coordinate and promote a school wide film festival.
  • Provide integral and varied support, planning, oversight, and communication as an academic advisor. 
  • Participate and engage in professional activities and gatherings at team, departmental, divisional, and school-wide levels. 
  • Use appropriate technology in support of the curriculum of the twenty-first century global classroom.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents and colleagues. 
  • Keep meaningful and accurate records. 
  • Work closely with colleagues and school leaders on the school’s curricular initiatives and implementation of ESD’s strategic plan. 
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues
  • Offer significant involvement and/or leadership in an extracurricular capacity as a club sponsor or athletic coach
  • Actively seek out professional development and growth opportunities. 
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Division Head or Department Chair.

Abuse Risk Management Standards:

  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with students.
  • Attends required abuse risk management training.
  • Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising students.
  • Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.

Working Environment:

  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
  • Generally, 40% sitting, 40% walking, and 20% standing.  
  • Minimal temperature variations (regular exposure to outside temperatures)
  • Off-site travel to include rustic environments and occasional overnight trips.
  • Generally, a hazard-free environment.
Requirements

Qualifications & Skills:

  • BA or BFA in Art/Photography, MFA preferred 
  • Experience with and ability to teach AP 2D Art & Design
  • Demonstrated passion for teaching and for Photography 
  • Strong organizational skills 
  • Ability to manage multiple ongoing tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to collaborate successfully and work cheerfully 
  • Knowledge and working experience of relevant technologies, including, but not limited to, film and digital photography equipment, darkroom processes, and photo editing software
  • Ability to manage an extensive equipment inventory and multiple teaching spaces
