About the Department

Are you a dynamic leader with a passion for urban development and community engagement? The City of Milwaukie is looking for a Planning Manager to take the lead on our most significant planning efforts. This is a unique opportunity to manage, coordinate, and direct both current and long-range planning projects, all while leading a talented team and enhancing our service delivery. If you're ready to make a real impact on our city’s growth, we want to hear from you!

Position Duties

What You'll Do

  • Lead with Vision: You'll be at the helm of our planning division, providing leadership through planning, organizing, and supervising all activities to achieve our goals. You’ll also provide expert recommendations and guidance on land use applications, ensuring compliance with all city, regional, state, and federal laws.

  • Act as a City Expert: You will serve as the go-to expert on land use, providing professional advice to city officials and preparing the annual work program for the planning division. You'll also have the chance to make engaging presentations to boards, commissions, civic groups, and the public.

  • Connect with the Community: We believe in putting our community first. You will be responsible for maintaining positive public relations, responding to citizens' inquiries about zoning, and navigating complex land use discussions. Your creative ideas for citizen involvement will be key to developing new engagement processes.

  • Collaborate and Grow: You won't be working in a silo. You'll work closely with peers across the Metro area to stay updated on best practices. You’ll also serve on state and regional committees and proactively seek out grants and other funding opportunities to support our city's goals.

Minimum Qualifications

Who We're Looking For

  • Experience: You should have at least six years of progressively responsible experience in land use, planning, or community development, including significant project management and supervisory experience. Experience specifically in the Portland Metro region is a huge plus.

  • Skills: You have a thorough knowledge of urban planning and development processes, especially those unique to Oregon and the Metro region. You are an excellent communicator, both orally and in writing, with a talent for preparing and presenting technical reports.
