Children’s Library Assistant
Job Title: Children’s Library Assistant
Salary: $16.37/hour
Proposed Schedule: Monday through Thursday (4:00 - 8:00 pm)
Every 3rd Saturday (9:30 - 5:00)
16 - 23.5 hours per week
Immediate Supervisor: Children’s Librarian
Supervises: N/A
GENERAL SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
This responsible customer service position ensures proper material circulation, library customer registration, and customer assistance. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Children’s Librarian. This staff member is responsible for supporting the library's goals and objectives by participating as a team member and supporting Library Board policies and strategic plans.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist patrons at the circulation desk, processing materials, issuing cards, and verifying circulation information.
- Assists patrons in locating materials, copying, computer work, etc., answers simple reference questions, and refers customers to reference librarians.
- Answers telephone, provides information, and assists customers by phone.
- Collects fines for lost and damaged materials and reconciles records.
- Ensures materials on shelves are in the proper order promptly.
- Can help with story times and programs as necessary.
- Ensures there are proper supplies for the operation of the children’s library.
- Communicates with other staff members and functions as a team player.
- Maintains positive communication and rapport with staff, customers, and external organizations.
- Performs opening and closing duties.
- Performs other duties assigned by the supervisor.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Required:
- Completion of a High School diploma
- Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of hire
- Ability to file and maintain records in an alphabetized system
- Some basic clerical knowledge
- Ability to establish positive rapport with staff, children, and caregivers
- Ability to work collaboratively
- Possess excellent customer service skills
- Ability to communicate (hear and speak clearly) with staff, patrons, and others
- Possesses an understanding of and uses proper time management skills
CONDITIONS:
Work is generally performed indoors in an office setting and requires routine bending, lifting, and carrying office supplies, library books, and other materials. The incumbent must frequently sit for extended periods, talk and hear, and be able to transport themselves to and from various locations within the city library. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various other pieces of equipment. While performing their duties, the incumbent must use their hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with their hands and arms. Work hours may occasionally be required in times of darkness. Vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level is usually quiet or moderate, but may be intense, depending upon the scheduled activity. Work requires extensive interaction with the general public and may be stressful when dealing with citizens and/or meeting deadlines.
