Salem Public Schools: Before and After School Grade 1 Literacy Tutors
Salem Public Schools is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic SPS Staff to partner with Catapult Learning to tutor grade 1 students in literacy for the 2025-2026 school year. This is an opportunity for school-day teachers, support staff and paraprofessionals to continue making a positive impact on our young learners beyond regular school hours.
About the Program
Catapult Learning will be providing high dosage literacy tutoring to grade 1 students. Staff will be trained on and use Catapult’s Science of Reading Curriculum. Tutoring typically follows a 3x a week for 40 minutes model. For SPS staff these hours would take place before or after school.
The program runs in two, 12 week sessions. We aim to start the first session by mid-October.
Staff will be expected to attend online Zoom trainings of Catapult Learning’s systems and curriculum before the anticipated start date.
Programs will operate at various times depending upon the schools agreed upon schedule with Catapult Learning.
What You'll Do
As a first grade literacy tutor, you'll be responsible for teaching Catapult Learning’s Science of Reading intervention curriculum to small groups of 4 students, 3x a week for 40 minutes. Your role is vital in ensuring a structured, supportive, and enriching experience. Key responsibilities include:
- Student Supervision & Engagement:
- Cultivate a welcoming and joyful environment for students before or after school.
- Plan and implement 40 minute lessons while maintaining fidelity to the curriculum.
- Engage and build positive relationships with students during tutoring sessions.
- Positively manage student behavior, collaborating to provide an exceptional tutoring experience.
- Program Operations:
- Maintain daily attendance along with tracking student success in Catapult Learning’s SIS.
- Plan engaging and targeted literacy lessons using the Science of Reading Teacher Lesson Manual.
- Administer phonics screeners and required assessments to students when necessary.
- Support program dismissal and parent pick-up protocols, ensuring children are released only to approved caregivers when applicable.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Work collaboratively with Catapult Learning staff and SPS staff.
- Attend Catapult Learning curriculum and systems trainings via Zoom. (Dates TBD)
Compensation:
- Staff will be paid their contractual hourly rate on a bi-weekly basis.

Job Requirements:
- Salem Public School paraprofessional, support staff or teacher.
- Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
- Passion for afterschool and before school programming and willingness to adapt to and contribute to a positive school culture
- Ability to partner with multiple stakeholders to meet student needs
- Plan and prepare literacy lessons for the program
- Classroom management & supervision
- Oversee safe and organized arrival and dismissal procedures when necessary
