Job Description:
- Comply with timelines, laws, and regulations as it relates to district, state, and federal policies and procedures.
- Develop and implement an instructional plan which is compatible with the school and system- wide curricular goals and the students’ Individual Education Program.
- Develop Individual Education Programs (IEP) for students with disabilities; implement the IEP; and use diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to update IEP’s as needed.
- Plan and implement non-academic instruction in areas such as social skills, toilet training, community based instruction.
- Provide direct special education instruction to identified students.
- Document and share student progress on goals and objectives, accommodations, service time, and discipline/suspensions. Collect and analyze student data and monitor student progress.
- Employ a variety of teaching methods to meet student needs. Implementation of these methods may require the adaptation or development of materials.
- Monitor student behavior; maintain discipline in the classroom; deescalates inappropriate behaviors; teach students appropriate behavioral strategies.
- Use CPI training and an understanding of the function of behavior to prevent behavior and intervene safely and effectively, including restraint when part of a written plan.
- Assist students with their personal and self-help needs, such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks that the students are not able to perform by themselves.
- Communicate with parents regarding their children’s educational progress via periodic written progress reports.
- Act as a case coordinator for assigned students; consults with community care-givers, school support professionals, and parents to better understand and meet student needs.
- Maintain student records in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities; and complies with state and federal education statutes.
- Participate in building level meetings and in special education meetings as directed by administrators
- Treat all students in a fair and equitable manner, interact effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and community.
- Follow a plan for professional development and demonstrate evidence of growth.
- Ability to maintain basic files and records.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Performs other related work as required.
- Coordinate and direct the activities of the Instructional Assistant, if applicable
- Proper NC certification preferred
- Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- Must qualify or be eligible to hold a North Carolina Professional Educator's License
- Strong background in North Carolina Standard Course of Study/Common Core, and Essential Standards
