POSITION: Safety and Security Officer (SSO)
PURPOSE OF JOB: Safety and Security Officers (SSO) are assigned to assure that the educational process is not obstructed or disrupted and to protect the students, staff, and district property from such disruptions or loss.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):
- Build strong student, staff and community relationships and model expected behaviors.
- Conduct frequent patrols of the building including exterior and parking areas around the building.
- Operate the fire alarm system, security system, CCTV, two-way radio, cellular phones, and desk phones.
- Write reports on incidents occurring on University Academy premises.
- Assist in all emergency situations and drills, including the EOP for the campus.
- Utilize a metal detector.
- Monitor student lunch shifts, passing periods and arrival and dismissal times.
- Open and close the building, including arming and disarming the building and securing all doors and entrances to campus.
- Conduct equipment inspections.
- Assist in answering phones, escorting visitors, and provide customer service to guests as needed.
- After hour emergency response is a must.
- Assist in training staff and students in crime prevention and emergency procedures.
- Maintain a professional working relationship with all employees in order to assure the safety and security of the building.
- Safety and Security Officers are under the administration of the Coordinator of Security and all SSO’s will receive their day-to- day assignments accordingly.
- Assist Administration/Directors in preventing disruptions and maintaining order. This does not include the involvement of disciplinary action; student discipline is not a safety and security function.
- Report for their daily assignments in proper uniform and with all issued equipment to perform their duties, unless otherwise directed by the Coordinator of Security. SSO’s will be observant of any district property being removed from the building.
- Observe the Central Office area to maintain a security presence. Officers shall greet visitors and ascertain the reason for the visit. Officers shall escort visitors to their destination. All guests will be asked for identification upon entry. When possible, officers shall assist the Central Office Administrative Staff with answering phones and writing hall passes. Officers will verify all students have a hall pass prior to visiting the nurse. Visitors or students are not allowed to enter the Central Office Hallway without prior approval from staff.
- Responsible for documenting and reporting all items that are not in working condition such as locks, alarms, equipment, etc.
- Understand and become familiar with the Safe Schools Act, I.D.E.A.L. mediation, conflict resolutions, emergency operations plans, alarm functions, and building floor plans.
- Attain certification in restraint techniques with provided development opportunities through the school.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma and at least two (2) years of school security experience preferred.
REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Safety and Security
SALARY: $35,000-$40,000 DOQ

POSITION: Full Time, 11:30am to 8:00pm with flexible scheduling with Saturdays required.
