Salary is determined on directly related experience supported by a service record or experience affidavit.  Annualized pay may be pro-rated based on actual start date.

 

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Maintenance and Custodial Services supports the overall management and operations of the district’s custodial program to ensure clean, safe, and well-maintained facilities for students, staff, and visitors. This role works under the direction of the Director of Maintenance and assists with planning, organizing, and supervising custodial operations across all district facilities. The Assistant Director provides leadership to custodial staff, coordinates training and professional development, monitors quality standards, and ensures compliance with health, safety, and regulatory requirements. The position also assists with budget oversight, supply and equipment management, scheduling, and the implementation of best practices to promote operational efficiency and excellent customer service.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or 4 years equivalent experience, and
  • 2+ years of experience in custodial services, facilities management, or a related field
  • 2+ years of progressive leadership experience to include:
    • Coaching, mentoring, developing, and performance managing employees/teams
  • Safe driving record verified by Texas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability coverage eligibility).
  • Bilingual (Read, write and speak Spanish proficiently).
  • Must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the candidate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in facilities management, business administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • 3+ years of experience in coaching, mentoring, developing, and performance managing employees/teams.
  • Public school experience
  • OSHA Safety Certification
  • TASBO Custodial Certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret data to support decision-making.
  • Ability to problem-solve, think critically, and manage conflicts.
  • Knowledge of custodial operation requirements for large, multi-site organization.
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures 
  • Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques.
  • Ability to monitor and maintain quality control standards.
  • Experience with budget management to include purchase orders and bids.
  • Daily attendance at work and punctuality are essential functions of the job.

Essential Functions/Key Responsibilities 

  • Determines areas of responsibility and allocates cleaning tasks in collaboration with building head custodians.
  • Maintains accurate records of all custodial staff, their assignments, and work shifts.
  • Distributes and tracks all custodial chemicals; ensures compliance with federal, state, district, and insurance regulations, and trains staff on the safe and proper use of equipment and chemicals.
  • Conducts regular inspections to ensure facilities meet established cleanliness and safety standards.
  • Oversees staff performance, coordinates training, and manages procurement to maintain efficient custodial operations.
  • Develops and implements strategies to achieve the Custodial Department’s mission and objectives.
  • Establishes and enforces quality standards to ensure operational excellence.
  • Designs and maintains processes to collect, analyze, and utilize operational data for decision-making.
  • Provides guidance on custodial practices specific to educational facilities.
  • Reviews and updates departmental procedures and staff assignments to align with District goals.
  • Develops and monitors annual operating budgets, including personnel, supplies, materials, and equipment, ensuring expenditures are consistent with departmental objectives.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
  • Comply with all district routines and regulations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned. 

Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of head custodians districtwide. Provides guidance to head custodians in the supervision and evaluation of building custodians.

Working Conditions

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including personal computer and peripherals.

Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.

Motion: Repetitive hand motions, including frequent keyboarding/use of mouse; occasional reaching.

Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent districtwide travel; occasional statewide and/or out-of-state travel.

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; work with frequent deadlines; maintain emotional control under stress.
