SUMMARY
The Street Maintenance Equipment Operator II operates and maintains equipment used to transport personnel, haul materials, supplies, and other equipment to and from various job sites.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participates in large-scale field operations for street construction, roadway, storm drainage, sidewalk maintenance, and repair projects
- Assists Crew Chief in hauling and compaction of materials associated with street repair
- Operates standard and tandem dump trucks for the hauling of dirt/backfill, forms, etc.; operates backhoe to remove existing concrete and material
- Performs routine inspections of equipment for mechanical readiness and safety
- Maintain equipment or report any malfunctions to supervisors
- Performs manual labor tasks (digging trenches, etc..)
- Participates in loading and unloading of materials and equipment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Safety- Knowledge of OSHA, City, and Federal rules and regulations, as well as work hazards and applicable safety precautions of the assigned work.
- Transportation- Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by road specifically, including laws and ordinances regulating the operation of vehicles.
- Construction- Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and procedures used in the construction and maintenance of streets.
- Operation and Control- Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
- Operation Monitoring- Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working
- Must be able to use hand tools such as shovel, rake, concrete saw, weed eater, blower, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma / GED
- Valid Class A commercial driver’s license and six (6) months of continuous CDL driving experience.
- Valid drivers license and the ability to obtain and maintain a City Driving Permit.
- Ability to obtain tanker endorsements within six (6) months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Class A Tanker endorsement
- 2 years of combined CDL driving experience
- Fork-Lift Certification
- OSHA 10-Hour Certification
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.
Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
