Position may be converted from 9-month to 11-month, based on program needs.

Evening, weekend, television, distance education (i.e., Lanai and Molokai), and off-campus (various high school campuses) may be assigned as part of the regular workload.

This is NOT a remote position – the job requires in-person work.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach introductory and intermediate transfer-level courses in Hawaiian Studies and Hawaiian Language.
  2. Teach day, evening, weekend, online (synchronous and asynchronous), early college, non-credit, and outreach (Hana, Lana?i, Moloka?i) courses.
  3. Conduct curriculum and program development for Hawaiian and Hawaiian Studies.
  4. Develop and support course and program development and assessment.
  5. Develop teaching strategies, instructional materials, and methods which (1) integrate appropriate learning resources, (2) integrate appropriate thinking skills into course content, (3) use learning outcomes-based instruction, and (4) address the needs of community college students.
  6. Prepare, adapt, and revise course syllabi, schedules, content, and student learning outcomes.
  7. Maintain substantive student interaction outside of class; at least one office hour per week for each course taught; engage in student advising; identify student learning needs and implement constructive responses to them; 
  8. Participate in faculty, campus, and administrative committees and initiatives.
  9. Develop an approved program of community service and professional self-improvement. 
  10. Plan, organize, and independently carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments.
  11. Provide service in areas of expertise to the campus, university, and larger community.
  12. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Hawaiian Language):

Functionally native oral and written fluency in Hawaiian, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:


 Master's degree in Hawaiian language or literature

OR Master’s degree in Hawaiian as a Second language
OR Master's degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian
OR Master's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education, or another language. At least 12 credits of 

*advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof.

OR Bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian language or literature and three (3) years of related work experience

OR Bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian as a Second language and three (3) years of related work experience

OR Bachelor's degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian, and three (3) years of related work experience

OR Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education, or another language. At least 12 credits of 

*advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof, and three (3) years of related work experience

 *Advanced coursework is defined as 300-400 level courses offered in a bachelor's program. "Graduate level" coursework is defined as post-baccalaureate courses at the level specified by the institution where the credits were earned.

Minimum Qualifications (Hawaiian Studies):

Master's Degree in Hawaiian Studies

OR

Master's Degree in Hawaiian Language with at least nine (9) credits of advanced and/or graduate level coursework focused on NH areas

OR

Bachelor's Degree in Hawaiian Studies AND three (3) years related work experience

OR

Master's Degree in Hawaiian Language with at least 15 credits of advanced and/or graduate level coursework focused on NH areas 

OR

Master's recognition in a specific area of Hawaiian knowledge as recognized by the Hawaiian Community in that area, AND 10 years of related work experience

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Experience teaching Hawaiian language and Hawaii culture classes at the postsecondary level, and fluency in the Hawaiian language.
  2. Understanding of curriculum development and instruction.
  3. Knowledge of Native Hawaiian history, language, politics, practices, and contemporary issues.
  4. Knowledge of teaching resources, instructional methods, and educational programs. Knowledge of student learning outcomes, assessment, and program review.
  5. Demonstrated ability to establish, maintain, and coordinate positive/productive working relationships with faculty, staff, and administration using good judgment, tact, and discretion.
  6. Ability to work successfully with multicultural groups and individuals with diverse academic abilities, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  7. Strong curriculum, proposal, and grant-writing skills.
  8. Knowledge of UHMC's mission and vision.
