The Director of Nursing (DON) maintains responsibility to ensure that personal performance, group performance and achieved outcomes conform to the principles of the Healing Environment. The DON designs systems within their scope of responsibility and influence to address work allocation or assignments, communication within and external to the department, enhancement of human and social capital, and effective resource management. The DON embraces change and fosters staff engagement through critical thinking, clear communication of expectations, creative thinking, and reflection. Leadership behavior supports staff empowerment by providing the information, resources, opportunity and support needed for performance excellence. The DON serves as a coach encouraging growth and development of individuals within their area of responsibility and in promptly addressing performance behavior not consistent with organizational and/or professional practice standards. The DON participates in the strategic planning process by establishing departmental goals and objectives that assist in achieving the Vision of Finger Lakes Health. Works collaboratively with other leaders throughout the organization to ensure knowledge based patient/resident/family centered decision making, quality care delivery and regulatory compliance. The DON effectively monitors department outcomes and takes action to resolve non-conformance.
