PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Test Engineer role at the IEM Power Lab is critical to ensuring the performance, safety, and compliance of the low and medium voltage power distribution equipment that IEM manufactures. This position is responsible for coordinating, overseeing, and conducting rigorous testing aligned with industry standards and internal specifications.
This position is responsible for planning and conducting electrical, thermal, mechanical, environmental and other tests. By analyzing test data and collaborating with cross-functional teams, the Test Engineer helps drive product improvements and resolve technical issues. This role requires maintaining accurate documentation and ensuring strict adherence to safety and compliance protocols. The Test Engineer contributes to the lab’s technical excellence and operational efficiency, ensuring high-quality outcomes for all testing projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinate, oversee and conduct testing on low and medium voltage power distribution equipment, including switchgear, circuit breakers and transformers in accordance with industry standards and internal specifications.
- Set up test fixtures, power sources, instrumentation and data acquisition systems for various tests, ensuring accuracy and repeatability.
- Conduct performance and validation testing on newly developed products and existing products undergoing evaluation or re-certification.
- Record and analyze test data, identify trends and anomalies and collaborate with engineering teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
- Develop and maintain test procedures, safety protocols and documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal quality standards.
- Train and mentor junior engineers and technicians.
- Adhere to the testing schedule, prioritize tasks and ensure timely completion of test objectives.
- Schedule and supervise testing at 3rd party laboratories when testing cannot be completed in-house (Travel expected to be less than 5%).
- Coordinate shipments and assist with packaging, loading and unloading equipment and supplies.
- Assist with assembling, modifying and teardown of equipment and test articles.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D engineering, manufacturing engineering and quality teams to drive product improvements and resolve technical issues.
COMPETENCIES:
- Proven experience in adhering to safety procedures specific to power distribution or power equipment testing, including NFPA 70E, lock-out tag-out protocols, effective grounding techniques and safe handling of medium voltage power sources.
- Strong understanding of electrical principles, testing methodologies and relevant standards (e.g., UL, CSA, IEEE, IEC).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with power test equipment and instrumentation, including data acquisition systems and test automation.
- Familiarity with laboratory competency and documentation standards such as ISO 17025 and UL's Data Acceptance Program preferred.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools and software (e.g., Python, LabVIEW) preferred.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a testing or engineering role, preferably in the power distribution industry.
