SUMMARY: This position is responsible for ensuring safety of community members including accident prevention in the water and on surrounding areas. Lifeguards will rescue and provide care for accident victims. All activities will be planned based upon the prevention philosophy of the Tu Ha’ Buts Youth Center and must be implemented per program policies and procedures and operating principles. Must be able to work a variety of hours, especially afternoons, evenings and weekends. Typical hours are weekdays 3:00-7:00 and weekends and school breaks 8:00-6:30. Variable days will be scheduled. Weekend shifts will be shared with other staff members so one person will not work every weekend. Summer hours will change to meet increased demand.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Recognizes and responds effectively to emergencies. 
  • Inspects the facility on a daily schedule and reports unsafe conditions and equipment to a supervisor.
  • Comply with and enforce all policies, procedures and regulations set by the department.
  • Maintain a professional manner when interacting with the community.
  • Responsible for prevention of accidents and minimizing or eliminating hazardous conditions.
  • Respond quickly to all emergency situations in the water or on surrounding areas.
  • Administer any first aid needed by a victim of an accident.
  • Actively educate community members around the purpose of rules and regulations.
  • Complete all records and reports as required.
  • Assist with cleaning of locker rooms, pool, pool deck, pool lobby and other pool areas.
  • Assist with maintenance and organization of pool systems and equipment.
  • Perform other support duties as required.
  • Exercise regularly to maintain a fitness      level. (swim at least 1000 yr a week)
  • Attend trainings and staff meetings as required.
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· Must be at least 16 years of age.

· Must maintain current certification in the following:

- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid (rev 2007)

- American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer

· Pre-employment testing of lifeguarding skills and knowledge.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent to draw and interpret bar graphs.


REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a current Lifeguard Certification (ARC, YMCA,) Current CPR/First Aid Certification. 

Preferred Certification Certified Pool Operator, and Water Safety Instructor.

While performing the duties of this generally is regularly required to talk or hear, the employee is also frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, the employee is occasionally required to climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, or climb and taste or smell, Ability to stand for a one and a half hour block of time on the pool deck and lift up to lift 60 lbs safely.

DRUG FREE WORKPLACE: The successful candidate will be required to have a urinalysis for drug and alcohol screening in accordance with the Tribe’s Drug Free Workplace Policy.

There will be no tolerance for the abuse of alcohol or use of illegal drugs while employed with the Parks and Recreation Department. Use of tobacco in front of youth during work time is not allowed. Tobacco use is allowable during breaks only and does designated locations. Any violation of these policies is cause for immediate termination.
