About the Department
JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of this class is to assist in the administration of the backflow program including: conducting site inspections, conducting site surveys, performing hazard analysis of customer sites, approving new installations, maintaining the compliance database and testing backflow assemblies; to assist in the construction, maintenance and repair of the County's water system; and to perform other technical work as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Responds to public inquiries and investigates complaints associated with wastewater collection and water distribution systems.
Reads, removes, replaces, sets or shuts off meters.
Installs and repairs pipes, conduits, meters, hydrants and fittings.
Locate sewer and water services.
Coordinates and oversees construction/installation requirements with contractors, plumbing officials, engineers and other officials.
Coordinates and inspects the installation of individual sewer connections under limited supervision; makes sure services lines are free of defects and obstacles.
Inspects sewer lines with camera equipment to determine the cause of sewer backups, low drain issues or any other breakages; inspects main line; inspects grease traps.
Performs wash-out sewer services.
Trains new system operators in department; oversees and inspects their field work.
Supervise assigned crew members. Supervisory duties include instructing, assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; selecting new employees; acting on employee problems; recommending employee discipline; and recommending discharge as appropriate.
Reviews the work of crew members for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; and offers advice and assistance as needed.
Receives and responds to inquiries, complaints, and requests for assistance from customers and the general public regarding areas of responsibility.
Prepares and submits detailed work records and reports; completes time sheets.
Attends training as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
May be on 24-hour on-call status as assigned; may be required to work during emergency conditions as assigned.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED.
Requires at least four (4) years of experience of related work experience.
Other Qualifications
Required Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
Must possess a “D” Water Distribution License.
Must possess a “D” Wastewater Collection License.
Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

This is a full-time position; typical work 40 hours per week Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employees must be available during the “core” work hours of 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and must work 40 hour each week to maintain full-time status. Must be available to work holidays and weekends during emergencies. This is a safety sensitive position and employees holding this position have the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. This position is subject to random drug testing.
