SALARY INFORMATION
Engineering Assistant 3: $44.49 / hourly – OT Eligible
Engineering Associate: $44.49 / hourly – OT Eligible
Engineer/Architect 1: $3,563.25 / biweekly – OT Ineligible
What you will be doing:
Engineering Associate / Engineering Assistant 3
- Develop bid-ready PS&E documents and detailed plans for medium-complex projects.
- Complete preliminary and detailed highway/airport designs in compliance with standards.
- Coordinate utilities, ROW, and conduct field investigations.
- Support public involvement through presentations and stakeholder engagement.
- Write technical specs, cost estimates, reports, and administer PSAs/Interagency Agreements.
Engineer / Architect 1
- Lead preparation of complete PS&E documents, studies, and plans for medium-to-high complexity projects.
- Perform advanced design work (traffic, highway, aviation) with manuals and modeling software.
- Conduct investigations, utility/ROW coordination, and manage stakeholder/public outreach.
- Prepare technical specs, cost estimates, reports, and oversee engineering documents.
- Independently administer PSAs/Interagency Agreements: proposals, consultant selection, monitoring, and coordination.
- Seal engineering documents prepared by self or under supervision.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is based in Fairbanks at the DOT&PF complex on Peger Road, where design, construction, maintenance, and support staff are all within walking distance. The role provides a dynamic blend of office work, field visits, and team collaboration, with opportunities to engage directly with stakeholders. Intermittent summer travel, and occasional winter travel, may be required for site visits or meetings, which could include travel by small plane or boat.

Position Duties
Engineering Assistant 3
Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitutions:
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.
Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).
Engineering Associate
Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying or architecture, of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitution:
ABET accredited college or technical school courses in engineering, architecture, land surveying or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for the non-specific required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month). A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET may substitute for four years of the non-specific required experience.
Engineer/Architect 1
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.
Note: Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.
Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
Minimum Qualifications

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. It may be filled at the Engineering Assistant 3, Engineering Associate, or Engineer/Architect 1 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
