Our Approach to AI in Hiring

At Mile Two, applications are reviewed by real people—not filtered out by bots. Authenticity matters more than keyword tricks.

We know you're probably using AI tools to help draft or polish your resumes, and that’s fine! We're using AI to write this blurb about AI!  But we expect you to make it your own. Resumes that feel copy-pasted I —repetitive, oddly phrased, “too perfect” matches to our job description— may hurt your chances. Adding personal touches and real examples of your work will make your application stronger.

We look forward to meeting the real you!

A Note About Our Application Process

Please answer our screener questions honestly and thoroughly (rather than writing “see resume”). These are reviewed by real people—not bots—and play an important role in our selection process. Thoughtful responses will strengthen your application.

Job Summary

We're seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented Controller to lead our finance team and serve as a key strategic partner to our senior leadership. Reporting to the CFO, you will take complete ownership of the entire accounting function, from daily operations to financial reporting, internal controls, and tax administration. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated leader with a strong sense of ownership who takes initiative to drive results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Management & Reporting
    • Financial Close & Statements: Own the end-to-end monthly close process to produce accurate financial statements, including the income statement and balance sheet, within a strict 5-business-day deadline.
    • Financial Operations: Act as a check and balance for the accounting team by meticulously reviewing and approving all Accounts Payable (A/P) invoices, payroll runs, outgoing cash transactions, and General Ledger (G/L) entries. You will also review and approve all monthly balance sheet reconciliations to ensure accuracy.
    • Cash Flow & Projections: Actively monitor the company's cash flow with a sharp attention to detail. You will empower your team to proactively engage with other departments to ensure all cash-impacting activities are identified and incorporated into the company's financial models, and you will be accountable for the comprehensive accuracy of our 13-week cash projections.
    • Project Control: Ensure a deep understanding of project-specific financial duties and industry best practices in order to effectively lead and guide the team.
  • Audit, Compliance & Tax Audit Management: Serve as the primary point of contact and manage all financial audits, including annual financial, 401(k), workers' compensation, sales and use tax, and critical DCAA audits to ensure full contract compliance.
    • Regulatory Adherence: Ensure strict adherence to all legal and financial reporting standards, including staying up-to-date with evolving accounting standards like ASC 606 and ASC 842.
    • Internal Controls & Policies: Establish and enforce a robust system of internal controls and policies to safeguard company assets and ensure the accuracy of our financial records. This includes ensuring all employee travel and expense reports are compliant with both company policy and relevant government regulations.
    • Tax Coordination: Lead the coordination of annual tax return preparation with our CPA firm, gathering all necessary data and acting as the main point of contact. Ensure an understanding of R&D tax credits and other financial details.
  • Strategic Leadership & Team Development
    • Team Leadership: Take complete ownership of building a high-performing finance team. You will set clear performance expectations and a culture of accountability, identifying and addressing performance gaps to ensure the team consistently delivers exceptional results. This includes mentoring and supporting career growth.
    • Process Improvement: Lead a culture of continuous improvement within the department. You are responsible for empowering your team to not just maintain the status quo but to actively identify and implement opportunities for greater efficiency and accuracy, including the automation of manual tasks.
    • Strategic Thinking: Analyze financial data to identify key trends and provide actionable insights that guide senior leadership's strategic decision-making. You will maintain an ongoing awareness of company goals, with a constant drive to ensure the finance team actively contributes to their achievement.
  • Communication & Relationship Management
    • External Relationships: Serve as the primary point of contact for all external stakeholders, including auditors, government representatives (including DCAA), and bank contacts. Provide specific and accurate financial data for annual bank reporting.
