About the Department
Hennepin County's Transportation Operations Department is seeking multiple permanent year around Heavy Equipment Operators. These positions will be responsible preserving and maintaining the county's roads system through a regular highway maintenance program to ensure safe and convenient use of the county's highway system by the traveling public. This program includes snow and ice removal, bituminous overlay, milling operations, crack sealing, tree and brush removal, concrete repair, and drainage.
Under general supervision, the Heavy Equipment Operator will perform work involving the operation of heavy gas and diesel powered, motorized equipment in Public Works (PW) construction and maintenance.
Location and hours:
These positions will be located at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive in Medina, MN 55340. Work hours for the summer are 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 4 days a week, and in the winter 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional overtime may be required. There is no public transportation to this facility.
Candidates must be available to work various shifts including day, evening, overnight, holiday, and weekend hours. Anyone indicating limited availability will not be considered.

These positions are full-time benefit-earning positions. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of Public Works to apply. Limited duration employees are not eligible. These positions will require a 1 year probation.

In these positions, you will:
- Operate heavy equipment (such as bulldozers, pavers, front end loaders, backhoes, and motor graders) on construction maintenance projects.
- Load trucks for construction, resurfacing, and maintenance operations.
- Direct work of employees as assigned.
- Plow and wing snow and apply ice control materials.
- Perform minor equipment repairs and report need for major repairs.
- Perform maintenance and construction tasks as assigned when equipment is not in use.
- One of the following:
- Three or more years of experience operating heavy equipment in road construction and maintenance or in a solid waste transfer station and/or recycling center.
- Completed an approved training program in heavy equipment operation and two or more years of experience operating relevant heavy equipment.
- A valid Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake and tanker endorsements. A Class "A" license must be obtained within one year of employment.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, and to perform a variety of manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance.
- Must be on the Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) intermittent list.
- Knowledge of:
- The operation of diesel and gas-powered construction equipment.
- Road construction and maintenance practices.
- Traffic control standards.
- Skill in the safe and effective operation and care of heavy equipment.
- Ability to lead assigned employees.
