PURPOSE OF POSITION: 

The Engineering Buyer is primarily responsible for the acquisition of technical goods and services that are vital to the engineering and manufacturing processes. While the role shares some commonalities with general procurement, like working on sustaining supply chain projects, it stands apart due to its requirement for a strong technical understanding of product specifications, supplier capabilities, and market trends. This position will work closely with engineers, project managers, and production teams to translate project requirements into procurement strategies and contracts. 


GENERAL FUNCTIONS / SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The Engineering Buyer is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and procuring goods and services necessary for engineering and sustainable production projects. This position requires a blend of technical understanding, commercial acumen, and relationship management skills to ensure that all requirements are met in a timely, cost-effective, and compliant manner.


1.    Promote the Bird Family Values through your actions – Trust, Innovation, Teamwork, Achievement and Accountability. 

2.    Be able to explain key concepts of the Quality Policy, Quality Goals, and complete requirements from ISO 900 Work with engineering and project teams to understand and communicate technical requirements to suppliers.

3.    Work closely with engineering teams to understand technical requirements. Translate complex specifications into clear procurement criteria and communicate these to suppliers.

4.    Strong negotiation skills, driving efficiencies and creating cost savings, with a focus on win-win outcomes and long-term supplier relationships.

5.    Project Management: Ability to manage multiple procurement projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet tight deadlines.

6.    Problem-Solving: Resourceful and resilient in overcoming challenges relating to supply chain disruptions, quality issues, or shifting project requirements.

7.    Interpersonal Skills: Builds rapport and trust with diverse teams and suppliers from various backgrounds and cultures.

8.    Support continuous improvement initiatives within the supply chain.

9.    Monitor market trends and technological advances relevant to specific product categories, identifying opportunities for cost savings, risk mitigation, and innovation.

10.    Work closely with other buyers and planners as well as mentoring and training junior buyers.

11.    Collaborate cross departmentally with various teams like quality, engineering, and design teams on high-impact, procurement initiatives.

12.    Oversee supplier audits and performance evaluations to ensure compliance with the company’s standards for custom and project-based production.

13.    Ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements and ethical sourcing standards.

14.    Track and report on KPIs such as cost savings, supplier delivery performance, and supplier quality.

15.    Some travel to suppliers is required.

16.    1 (Quality Management Systems) training.  

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED: (must have all)

    Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Economics, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience required 

    Master’s degree preferred.

    Professional procurement certification (e.g., CPM, CPSM) preferred

    5+ years of progressive purchasing experience, with proven track record in technical capacity.

    Strong technical aptitude and ability to interpret engineering drawings/specifications.

    Exceptional negotiation, communication, and analytical skills.

    Expertise in supply chain optimization and procurement technology for custom make-to-print operations.
