THE POSITION
The City of Santa Barbara Fire Department is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Fire Inspector III. This position plans, directs, and participates in the daily operations of the Fire Prevention Bureau.
Duties may include:
- Supervise Fire Prevention Bureau personnel
- Supervise, direct and participate in all facets of fire incident investigations and all documentation Supervise and provide input for all Land Development Team functions
- Supervise, assign, and evaluate the work of fire inspectors
- Supervise and provide input for all code enforcement activity
- resolve inspection issues and concerns, make recommendations to resolve concerns
- Distribute workload and prioritize inspection assignments
- Confer with architects, contractors, builders and the general public in the field and office, explain and interpret requirements and restrictions
- Prepare analytical and statistical reports
- Assists the Fire Marshal in the implementation of work plans
Hybrid/Flexible Work Schedule:
May be required to be on-call evenings and weekends.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this class are characterized by responsibility for supervising the daily operations of the Fire Prevention Bureau including participation in the Land Development Team, conducting fire and arson investigations, hazardous materials inspections, engine company prevention training and referrals, code compliance and enforcement.

Position Duties
Knowledge of:
- Principles of leadership and supervision
- Principles, practices and techniques of fire prevention
- Department policies and procedures; Arrest, search and seizure procedures
- Basic fire chemistry
- Procedures of fire investigation
- Fire protection and detection systems
- Hazardous materials inspection and enforcement
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations
- Fire related codes and ordinances enforced by the City, including the California Fire Code, California Building Code T-24, California Code of Regulations, Penal Code
- Major types of building construction, materials and methods
- Principles, practices and procedures of firefighting.
Ability to:
- Lead, coordinate and review the work of staff in the area of work assigned
- Perform complex fire and life safety inspections
- Coordinate fire inspection functions with other departments, outside agencies, and the public
- Supervise and conduct complex fire scene investigations including evidence collection, witness interviews, detailed investigation reports, fire scene photography
- Qualify and testify in court as an expert witness
- Interpret, explain, and enforce Department policies and procedures
- Interpret and explain City policies and procedures. Prepare clear and concise reports
- Interpret and apply pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations
- Read and interpret complex building plans, specifications and building and fire codes
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Progressively responsible fire inspector experience with a public agency performing a wide range of complex fire scene investigations and fire and life safety inspections. A minimum of two years of progressively responsible project supervision or case management, particularly coordinating with overseeing the work of others.
Education and/or Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in the Fire Sciences.
An Associates degree or higher from an accredited college or university with major course work in building construction, emergency services, fire science or a related field is desirable.
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within 1 year, California State Fire Inspector II, California State Fire Investigator I Certification (or equivalent).
