Our foaming department, at our Marvin Street location has an opening for a backup Foaming Head Operator position! This is a key position within our Operations functions and will work closely with our Foaming Head Operator and other key foaming and QA team members to produce high quality foam for our internal and external customers.
Summary
Sets up and operates the Continuous Foam (CF) Line to produce our various foam types. Makes required adjustments within operational guidelines to ensure that production standards for quality and efficiency are maintained. Regularly works to achieve foaming utilization number determined by Foaming Process Engineer.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitors pumps, meters, cut-off saw and conveyors for each foam run through both manual and software controlled means.
- Monitors all raw materials and conveyor temperatures for established levels. Consults with Foaming Process Engineer if any discrepancies are observed.
- Accurately sets all meters to ensure proper flow off the CF Line to achieve Class A foam.
- Notifies Foaming Process Engineer of any incorrect or abnormal run conditions. Drastic variations will require notification to the Foaming Process Engineer and R&T.
- Makes CF Line decisions regarding foam line setting changes to improve foam quality. If changes occur outside normal operational guidelines, consultation with the Foaming Process Engineer is required.
- Maintains direct, effective communication with the QA team in order to ensure first class foam.
- Helps in determining, printing and distributing weekly foaming production schedule.
- Notifies Maintenance in the event of any mechanical problems.
- Consults with the Production Manager regarding special runs or situations.
- Ensures that the foaming head is thoroughly cleaned in a timely manner – optimally once per week. Maintains clean equipment and work areas, following established procedures and techniques.
- Follows established safety procedures and informs Production Manager of any unsafe conditions. Properly uses all required personal protective equipment.
- Must follow with all standard operating procedures relating to assigned areas.
- Directs the daily operations of the foaming team, instructing the Compounders and Material Handlers of the work schedule, specific tasks, problems and proper communications needed for a well-functioning team to perform and meet the goals of the department.
- Issues proper paperwork and enters raw material usage and work order information regarding daily foam production.
- Maintains foam yield information in EXCEL and daily foam line information in the QA database in ACCESS.
- Must remain near the control booth during the entire time the foam line is in operation. Barring unforeseen circumstances, any trending, data entry, yield data, QA database data or other computer work should be completed at this time.
- Responsible for the Foaming Department day-to-day compliance with environmental rules, including air operating permit, hazardous waste generation, handling and coordinating of emergency response activities.
- Leads, participates in and supports Smithers-Oasis continuous improvement activities.
- Supports and leads by example the Core Values of the organization.
- Understands the MOC (Management of Change) and PSM (Product Safety Management) requirements for chemicals in Ohio.
- Make sure that Purchasing is aware of chemical performance when necessary.
- Performs other duties as required.
Hazardous Wastes
- Manages all hazardous waste collection/containment at Satellite collection area
- Ensures that all collection containers of hazardous waste are properly labeled and sealed/covered when not in use
- When 55 gallons of liquid hazardous waste has been collected, must notify the Foaming Compounder/Utility to retrieve, label with current date, and transfer to 90-day containment area.
- Manages segregation and proper containment of solid hazardous waste in dedicated waste bin
- Ensures that the solid hazardous waste bags are labeled when changed and transferred to 90-day hazardous waste containment area.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Requires education of technical nature which will give a background sufficient to understand technical problems of average nature such as problems involving the laws of motion, stress in metals, strength of materials, etc.
- One to three years as Compounder in our Foaming Department or similar experience working in compounding role.
- General instructions and standard practices usually applicable. Due to the variety and character of factors to be considered, decisions require some initiative as well as judgment and planning to choose prescribed alternatives which in turn require use of resourcefulness or judgment to adapt to variations in problems encountered. High level of initiative within set guidelines.
- Considerable care necessary. Value of equipment and material high. Defect in equipment or product would be serious. High degree of care necessary to prevent serious accidents; May in temporary disability or broken limbs.
- Responsible for directing other employees occasionally.
- Somewhat disagreeable working conditions. Frequent exposure to fumes. Predominately working inside, but on occasion will be required to work outside. Extended work hours are at times required with this position in order to perform all the functions properly.

This position will follow the work schedule of our foaming department and may require early or overtime hours.
This position falls within our K-8 pay grade with a pay range of $26.80 - $36.75.
