POSITION: Instructional Mentor

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State
Code § l8A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and JCBOE Evaluation

JOB SUMMARY: Working under general supervision of the building principal and programmatic supervision by the Curriculum and Instruction Department, this position provides support and guidance for beginning and new teachers, promoting growth and development to improve student learning in Jefferson County.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with principals and teachers to implement effective strategies based on exemplary practices.
- Model and collaborate with mentee in implementing effective teaching and learning strategies.
- Provide consistent consultation regarding effective, research-based instructional strategies, curricula, and resources.
- Meet with mentee to facilitate lesson and unit planning.
- Observe mentee for feedback on instructional practice and strategies.
- Establish and maintain a collaborative relationship with mentee.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by building principal.
- Complete required documentation in accordance with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
- Provide beginning of the year support and guidance based on school/county level expectations.
- Model professionalism at all times for the purpose of demonstrating expected behaviors and actions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Professional Teaching Certificate
- Have no fewer than five (3) years of successful teaching experience with accomplished ratings or higher on teacher evaluation system.
- Have thorough knowledge and understanding of the West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards for assigned programmatic level
- Have thorough knowledge and understanding of West Virginia Professional Teaching Standards to support high-quality instructional practices in all classrooms
- Have thorough knowledge and understanding of the analysis of performance and assessment data, including West Virginia General Summative Assessments, interim assessments, STAR, and other formative and summative assessments, to facilitate meaningful interpretation and decision making to impact teaching and learning
- Be a member of the faculty in which the mentee is assigned.
- Teaches at/near the same grade level or certification area of the mentee if possible
- Demonstrate leadership skills with the ability to communicate and relate well to school staff and administration.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree or higher, Mentor Teacher trainer provided by the WVDE to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/ technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
