Job Description:We are currently seeking a Mining System Specialist to join our mining team, on a 14 days on and 7 days off assignment rotation to site in Leroy, SK. The Mining System Specialist will be responsible for the deliverables and documentation required for the mining system deployment activities: lowering, storage, assembly, launch, and commissioning and will have the opportunity to work on the Hatch and Bantrel Joint Venture (HBJV) to execute engineering and construction on the BHP Jansen Potash Mine Project in Saskatchewan. After successfully completing the Definition Phase Study for the project, the HBJV is currently carrying out the Detailed Engineering Phase for the Processing, Non-Process Infrastructure (NPI) and Mining Areas of the 4.5 Mtpa Stage 1 Potash Mine. With a published TIC of US $5.3-5.7 Billion this will represent one of the largest projects and private investments in Canada. The HBJV will use a hybrid of best-in-class new developing technologies and systems as well as the proven HBJV suite of tools to execute this exciting project.

The Jansen project has set up a dedicated team to execute the mining scope. As the mining scope is on the project critical path, this team supports the sequential nature of mining tasks while ensuring seamless interfaces with the rest of the Jansen project. This team will promote shared accountability between BHP and HBJV, trusting that the best person is selected for each role as they work towards safely delivering the mining scope on time, on budget, and with high quality. This team will strive for effective work planning, rapid and empowered decision-making, and continuous improvement through a joint construction and operational mindset.
The Mining System (MS) Specialist will work with the other Mining Systems team members and the BHP Ops Maintenance Mining Systems team. The mining system is made up of a borer machine, extendable belt system, vent-power-train, and friction monorail system; deployed independently and using existing and new Jansen mining infrastructure. The MS Specialist will focus on the deliverables and documentation required for the mining system deployment activities: lowering, storage, assembly, launch, and commissioning.
The MS Specialist will work closely with the vendor (equipment provider), package coordinators, and Subject-Matter Experts (SMEs). The MS Specialist will ensure all documentation associated with the mining system deployment activities are readily available in a timely manner. They will support with vendor and/or third party personnel onboarding, resource proposals, and review of LEMs. The MS Specialist will play a vital link to the equipment provider and ensuring that any questions or concerns are communicated and addressed. They will also support in bringing in SMEs into reviews as required.
The MS Specialist will support the MS Planner with weekly and monthly progress reporting and forecasting. They will also support BHP Operations Underground Production with vendor interface while getting ready for mining system launch.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review vendor documentation and ensure that the onsite team has the latest information accessible for planning and execution
- Submit technical queries
- Interface with the vendor/contractor and other site teams
- Support BHP Ops with future operations planning/information gathering as required
- Support the onboarding of third party personnel
- Spend time during deployment activities underground and in the field
- Execute improvement initiatives
- Order spare parts if/as required
- Support project management tasks – track costs, support/complete trends, support contractual updates and issuance of documents
- Site Specific
- Participate in field leadership
- Participate in company and site required training
- Participate in the site risk and control program
- Attend Managing Operational Performance meetings

- Operate day-to-day ensuring that activities are prioritized in line with broader objectives
- Manage time effectively and adhere to deadlines
- A recognized bachelor’s degree in Mining, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering; or Journeyperson Electrician or Mechanic; or equivalent combination of education, training, or work experience
- Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience within underground mining, equipment manufacturing, or related industries
- Familiarity with Miner Borers, Continuous Miners and flexible/extendable conveyor systems, mine infrastructure (such as power, ventilation and bulk materials handling).
- Capable of learning new software programs for project management
- Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders including functional managers and discipline leads on the project, clients, outside vendors and contractors
- High attention to detail, motivation, and commitment to quality outcomes.
- Ability to operate effectively and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment utilizing agile methodologies
- Demonstrated ability to learn and quickly comprehend new concepts
- Demonstrated strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills including root cause analysis training
- Ability to communicate effectively across various stakeholder groups
