Pay and Benefits: In addition to a comprehensive, low-cost benefits package, King County Metro offers some of the most competitive pay rates in the region for Transit Electronic Technicians. Fully qualified, journey-level technicians start at 90% of the salary range (Step 3 of 5), with additional shift differentials for evening and overnight work. Below are the pay rates for fully qualified ETs:  
  • First shift (“Day shift”): = $49.91
  • Second shift (“Swing shift”): +5% differential= $52.41
  • Third shift (“Graveyard shift”): +7.5% differential= $53.65

Applicants who demonstrate less-than full proficiency during testing may be offered a position at pay step 2, along with a 12-month individual training plan and qualification period designed to help them reach journey-level status. The step 2 pay rates are as follows:

  • First Shift: $44.37/hour
  • Second Shift: +5% Shift Differential ($46.59/hour )    
  • Third Shift: +7.5% Shift Differential ($ 47.70/hour)

Safety Sensitive PositionThis position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment, and subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.

Position and Vacancy Details: This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) 17-month Term-Limited Temporary (TLT)/Special Duty Assignment (SDA) position in the Transit Electronic Technician classification. An eligibility list of qualified candidates may be created to fill future vacancies in this classification as they become available. If created, the eligibility list would be active for 12 months from the posting date, and may be utilized at the hiring authority’s discretion.  

Although this initial vacancy is temporary in duration, it is full-time, eligible for benefits, and may have the opportunity to convert to career service (permanent) positions, when possible.  Vehicle Maintenance invests heavily in its staff’s development, and SDA/TLT positions give candidates a chance to gain knowledge, skills, and experiences that can be applied to future opportunities.

Position Duties

Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role, you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work. As a Transit Electronic Technician, you will also:

  • Diagnose propulsion malfunctions on trolley coaches; remove and replace defective electrical and electronic components and wiring as appropriate.
  • Troubleshoot and repair malfunctions on coach ancillary/peripheral systems and other transit and transit-related electronic equipment.
  • Service and maintain analog and digital control systems; troubleshoot solid-state electronic systems; fabricate and install special electronic testing systems.
  • Fabricate, retrofit, and update specialized electronic equipment and devices to enhance and extend transit coach performance.
  • Perform component-level troubleshooting by interpreting and reading schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to identify and repair system defects and malfunctions.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance (PMs) inspections; make adjustments and alignments to optimize transit coach performance as needed.
  • Set up and operate various types of common electronic test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, function generators, chart recorders, insulation testers, data loggers, computers, and other specialized test equipment to troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning electronic equipment.
  • Ensure proper calibration of test equipment is accomplished through compliance with established preventative maintenance schedules, practices, and procedures.
  • Assist other job classes, such as mechanics, with electrical troubleshooting.
  • Maintain records of completed calibrations, PMs and repairs, time worked, and materials used; input and extract data using an automated information maintenance management system.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Work is performed in a transit base setting (indoors in a shop as well as in the yard on buses). Some work is performed outdoors or in shop areas that do not have regulated temperatures. Employees are potentially exposed to vehicle exhaust, cleaning chemicals, high voltage, oils, gasoline, diesel fuel, moving vehicles, and hydraulic fluid.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform physically demanding work including bending/stooping, kneeling, lying down, standing, and working in awkward postures on a frequent basis.

Minimum Qualifications

 We are looking for candidates who have the following minimum qualifications

  • Any combination of experience, education, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
  • Knowledge of electric and electronic systems and components.
  • Knowledge of solid-state circuitry and the applicable diagnostic and repair techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of analog and digital control systems.
  • Knowledge of the current and best practice repair procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of the tools and equipment used in diagnosing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing electrical and electronic systems and components.
  • Skill in the interpretation and application of schematics, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and similar materials.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computer office software programs including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and email.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
  • Effective troubleshooting skills, and basic mathematic skills. 
  • Ability to collaborate with others and work effectively as part of a team, as well as work independently.
  • Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Desirable qualifications include (but are NOT required):

  • Skills, knowledge, or experience related to repairing and maintaining closed-circuit television (CCTV.)
  • Experience working around high voltage, in accordance with applicable safety legislation and guidelines, to effectively measure high voltages (700 volts) with hand-held test equipment.

Necessary special requirements:  

  • Must be willing to work any shift assignment at any base location, and on any shift or schedule as assigned . This includes weekdays, nights, weekends, and/or holidays if scheduled or required.    
  • Must be willing and able to report to the worksite in inclement weather
Licensing Requirements: 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s license with an acceptable 5-year driving record  
  • Must obtain a valid Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) before hire, and successfully obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and passenger endorsement within 90 days of hire.  After you are hired, King County Metro will provide you paid training with our own experts to support your efforts in obtaining your Class B CDL.
  • Note: To obtain a CLP in Washington State, you must be able to provide your current license, the medical certification obtained through the required physical (DOT Card,) your social security number, and proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency. Other Qualifications

Selection Process: Applications will be reviewed to determine if the candidate meets the qualifications and requirements posted within this job announcement. The most competitive candidates presenting evidence that they meet or exceed the qualifications noted above will be invited to participate in the “One-Stop” testing event on one of the dates listed below:

**ONE-STOP TESTING EVENT**: In-person in Tukwila, WA. Offers may be made after either event:

  • Friday October 3rd,  starting as early as 6:15am – This date is only offered to those early applicants who apply by the priority consideration date mentioned above. 
  • Thursday October 16th , starting as early as 6:15am. 
  1. TESTING: Candidates have up to two hours to complete the written multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank knowledge test.  Interviews will be offered to candidates who pass with satisfactory test scores. 
  2. INTERVIEW: After a brief break, candidates with satisfactory test scores will be asked to participate in a 30-minute panel interview.  You will be allowed to preview a printed copy of the interview questions for 15 minutes prior to your interview, and any notes you make on the preview document may be used as a point of reference for yourself.

OFFERS:The candidate(s) with the highest combined testing and interview scores may receive a conditional offer.Offers may be made after either hiring event, and candidates who apply by 9/7/25 may be given first consideration. Candidates who accept a contingent offer of employment must meet all pre-employment screening requirements for King County safety-sensitive positions. These requirements include items such as:
  • Passing a pre-employment physical for the Transit Electronic Technician classification, 
  • Verification of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit (or actual Commercial Drivers License)
  • Passing a driving abstract review with an acceptable five-year driving record.
  • Completing satisfactory reference checks from your previous employers (and/or a King County Work Record Review if you already work at King County)
  • Passing a drug/alcohol screen and two-year FTA background verification  

Final offers will be extended once the pre-employment screening steps have been successfully completed by the candidate. Our goal is to have new hires start by November 10th, 2025, but this will be determined by how quickly the selected candidate completes the requirements listed above. Candidates hired from an eligibility list at a later date will have their pre-employment process begin at that time.

Work Schedule and Location: Work is performed at the job site, 40-hours per week with two consecutive days off (not necessarily Saturday and Sunday). Work schedules and locations are based on a seniority “pick” system. This position is not exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime hours. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift, including any combination of days off, at any location.
