Overview:

Working under the supervision of the Clinical Manager, the Emergency Room Tech performs various patient care activities necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of the patients.

Responsibilities:

Patient Care Activities

  • Explains and performs basic care as directed by the RN or physician while meeting the patient basic physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs.
  • Monitors, reports change in patient's condition and seek guidance of the RN or physician.
  • Maintains and stock supplies at bedside. Orders supplies from purchasing as needed.
  • Prepares patients for examination, admission, discharge, diagnostic procedures or transfers to another facility while remaining aware of patient's rights.
  • Cleans the department, prepares the patient care area for the next patient to be seen and treated.
  • Transport non-critical patients and assist RN in transporting patients to their assigned room.
  • Performs 12 lead EKG per policy.
  • Cleans wounds under direction of RN/Physician.
  • Applies orthopedic devices, instructs or demonstrates care of devices and/or gait training under the direction of the RN.
  • Renders post mortem care.
  • Performs visual acuity and prepares the patient for eye exams.
  • Adheres to infection control policies and procedures.
  • Maintains patient safety by checking equipment, using side rails, posey jackets, and safety restraints.
  • Knowledgeable of all hospital emergency codes and procedures, including hospital disaster and fire plan.
  • Breaks down trays after use and cleans instruments to be sterilized.
  • Administers to the patients needs for personal hygiene, comfort and nutrition.
  • Provide for a safe environment by proper placement and disposal of equipment and supplies.

  • Independently performs assigned duties, willingly assist staff in delivery of more complex treatment and procedures.
  • Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed, although not directly assigned.
  • Seek guidance and direction as necessary for performance of duties.
  • Recognizes and respond to priorities in the patient care progress.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in volume, emergencies, staffing or scheduling.
  • Adheres to dress codes and appears in manner that is appropriate for professionals.
  • Encourages and utilizes communication with others that is appropriate for professionals.
  • Communicates well with manager/supervisor reporting problems with equipment, supplies or procedures. Request assistance as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality as related to job responsibilities.
  • Exhibits willingness to resolve problems as they arise.
  • Attends 75% staff meetings.
  • Complete assigned work within shift.

Customer Service

  • As observed all interactions are conducted in a professional manner.
  • Verbal and written feedback from patients, family members/significant others, medical staff, visitors and co-workers indicates behavior conducive to positive guest relations.
  • Consistently exhibits appropriate phone protocol (e.g., answers phone promptly, is courteous and helpful).
  • Consistently contributes to the team effort (e.g. assists co-workers when need is observed or upon request, offers constructive complaints).
  • Consistently displays cheerful and positive attitude.
  • Demonstrated respect and cooperation in all staff relationships and a genuine willingness to prevent and resolve interpersonal conflicts.

  • Completes annual updates within established time frames.
  • Completes general and departmental orientation within established time frames.
  • Attends 80% of in-service programs.
  • Maintains licensure/certification as appropriate.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum Education: Graduate of state certified medical assistant, EMT or C.N.A program.
  • Minimum Experience: 1 year acute care experience preferred.
  • Required Certification/Registration: BLS, MAB, 12 lead experience preferred.
