Job Summary
Perform non-instructional classroom duties as assigned by the principal under the general supervision of certified special education teacher.
Position Functions and Responsibilities
- Understands and promotes Elizabeth Seton Children’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values to ensure application with organizational policies and procedures.
- Assist teacher and classroom staff in maintaining a safe and organized learning environment (keep materials and equipment clean and in working order, set-up materials and have them available for use by students and staff during activities according to the daily lesson plan
- Assist students in physical care tasks and health related activities including therapeutic feeding, toileting and positioning in adapted equipment
- Collaborate with classroom team in designing lesson plan activities based on knowledge of children with special needs and child development
- Assist teacher in maintaining accurate classroom documentation (student attendance and health checks, classroom housekeeping daily checklists, etc.) according to Coleman policy
- Transport students to and from school; making sure they are seated securely and have all necessary adapted equipment in working order
- Be aware of classroom activities and location of students at all times; anticipate and respond to individual needs as directed by the teacher
- Carry out standards for customer service; quality improvement; professional development; environmental, safety and infection control practices; confidentiality, corporate compliance and all other John A. Coleman policies and procedures; attend all mandatory in-services to ensure regulatory compliance and best practices in working with students and their families
- Perform other tasks to support the operations of the school as assigned by School Administration
Education Requirements:
- High school diploma required; or
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- Experience with children with special needs
Employee Requirements:
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language fluently
- Must meet or exceed all health standards and requirements for the position as established by NYDOH and all other regulatory agencies
- Must meet the general health requirements set fourth by the policies of this School which includes a medical and physical examination
- Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of thirty-five (35) pounds
- Perform tasks that may involve exposure to the children’s blood/body fluids
- Must be able to assist in the evacuation of children, if necessary
Working Conditions:
- Will work in a well-lighted and ventilated area
- Will be subject to frequent interruptions
- May be asked to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary
Hourly Rate:
$20.22/Hr.
