The University of Austin invites applications and nominations for the Harvey C. Mansfield Chair in Political Philosophy, established through the generosity of the Alder Tree Charity Foundation.

Position Description

The holder of the Mansfield Chair will be a distinguished scholar—or one on the path to distinction—in political philosophy and teaching. The position is open to candidates at the assistant, associate, and full professor levels. We seek scholars with an actual or potential record of outstanding research in the tradition inaugurated by Leo Strauss and exemplified by Harvey C. Mansfield. This Chair is dedicated to preserving and advancing Mansfield’s intellectual legacy—his studies of Machiavelli, Tocqueville, the American Founding, and the classical tradition, which have shaped the field for more than half a century. The successful candidate will bring the same rigor, independence of mind, and devotion to the great books that defined Mansfield’s scholarship, and will engage students in grappling with the enduring questions of political life.

Review of applications will begin September 2025 and continue until the position is filled. Applications and nominations should be sent electronically to: [email protected]
