Job Statement

Under the supervision of Network Infrastructure Manager in coordination with Field Network Technician Crew Leader this junior level position works in conjunction with more senior technicians but also independently when possible. While building knowledge and experience, assists with installation and maintenance of systems supported by the Field Network Technician Team such as structured wiring, telecommunications equipment, power systems, and fiber infrastructure.

Essential Duties

  1. Installs and maintains office communication infrastructure.
  2. Assists with installation and maintenance of office, training, and meeting space audio-visual & telephony infrastructure.
  3. Uses documentation supporting the administration of office telephony and audio-visual technologies.
  4. Assist with installations of wired, wireless, and cellular networking infrastructure such as routers, switches, antennas, and fiber optic transport. Assists with troubleshooting of such technologies.
  5. Assist with installation and maintenance of inside plant network, voice, and audio-visual wiring throughout Huntsville Utilities and HU-managed facilities in accordance with all applicable fire & building codes, safety and industry standards.
  6. Assist with deployment, configuration, and maintenance of AMI mesh communications infrastructure and associated SCADA integrations.
  7. Uses documentation supporting the administration of AMI mesh communications infrastructure.
  8. Uses documentation of infrastructure supporting SCADA Communications in partnership with SCADA Communications team.
  9. Maintains fiber hut sites and HU facilities and tenant leased spaces through site and facility cleanliness, regular systems maintenance, inspections, and restocking. Provides tenant escort and tenant installation assistance where needed.

Additional Duties

  1. Assists with inside and outside plant fiber optic installations as needed. Supports other stakeholders and municipal entities when necessary.
  2. Maintains accurate inventory of spare parts, small tools, and installation supplies. Orders materials and coordinates with suppliers as necessary to ensure adequate stock is kept on-hand of any such materials not handled by Stores team. Makes small purchases with P-card and submits purchase requests for material and equipment procurement.
  3. Assist with installation of grounding, bonding, and surge protection for our communication equipment.
  4. Assists in the use of service monitors, spectrum analyzers, Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), and other test equipment to monitor and troubleshoot communications and facility infrastructure.
  5. Ensures all workplace safety policies & procedures as well as industry standard safety guidelines are followed while performing duties.

 

Job Requirements

Education/Training/Certifications: Minimum high school graduate or equivalent.

Experience: Practical troubleshooting experience in technical areas such as electronics or information technology preferred. Experience in wiring audio-visual and communications networks preferred.

 

Additional Requirements

Equipment: Assist with operation of light service and bucket trucks, computers, radio, power tools, technician hand tools, pole climbing gear, and electronic test equipment.

Physical Demands: Duties may include climbing communications towers 100' or more as well as carrying supplies and equipment weighing up to 50lbs. Cannot be color blind. Subject to outside weather conditions. Must be able to complete the requirements to be classified as an authorized climber and assist in elevated rescue operations.

Other:  Subject to recall and after-hours duties. Basic written and verbal communication skills. Valid driver’s license. 

 

Initial and continued employment in the Field Network Technician progression is contingent on obtaining and maintaining a clear background check required for access to locations housing City of Huntsville ITS networks and the ability to obtain and maintain badge access to Redstone Arsenal. 

This position is considered a safety sensitive position. All employees in safety sensitive positions are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

 

The Selected Candidate for this position will be required to successfully pass a WORK KEYS test.
