POSITION TITLE: Nurse - LVN

 

EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-Exempt

 

REPORTS TO: Principal & Nurse w/ Administrative Duties

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  10 months

 

HOURLY SALARY RANGE:  Minimum $17.15, Midpoint $21.44, Maximum $25.73

 

Primary Purpose:

Assist registered school nurse in assuming recordkeeping, providing minor first aid care, and conducting health screenings.  Work under the clinical supervision of the administrative nurse or registered school nurse.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification

High School diploma or GED

Valid Texas license issued by the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners

Current CPR certification

Proof of immunization against Hepatitis B Virus

 

Special Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of basic first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Strong communication (verbal and written), organizational, and interpersonal skills

Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills

Ability to use personal computer and software to develop databases and perform word processing

 

Experience:

Minimum of two years’ experience in health-related position.  Contact with school-age children, pediatrics care, emergency care, and/or public health care, preferred

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Nursing Services

  • Provide first aid and emergency procedures utilizing school health protocols and care plans established by the nurse with administrative duties or school nurse.
  • Administer medication to students according to board policy and district procedures; maintain accurate record of medication dispensed.
  • Assist with screening activities including measuring height and weight, testing vision and hearing, and examining spinal column and scalp. Complete required reports as directed by the school nurse.
  • Implement the individualized student health care plans as established by the school nurse and physician.
  • Collaborate with the school nurse, principal, counselor, teachers, parents, child nutrition staff, and others regarding the health needs of the general population and those students with identified health conditions.
  • Provide guidance to unlicensed assistive personnel or other staff on health-related tasks as directed.

Safety

  • Use Universal Precautions procedures when providing wound care and cleaning body spills.
  • Keep health clinic clean and sanitary.

 

Records and Reports

  • Maintain accurate student health records, including immunizations, medication administration, and individual student treatments.
  • Prepare and maintain correspondence, reports, and records using personal computer.
  • Maintain a daily log of health activities, including accidents, communicable disease data, and referrals.

 

Compliance

  • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health Services rule, State Board of Education rule, board policy; and comply with district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

 

Communication and Community Relations

  • Communicate with parents regarding individual students as directed by the school nurse.
  • Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.
  • Assist families in the use of community resources for health-related needs.

 

Professional Growth and Development

  • Develop professional skills appropriate to job assignment and attend professional learning sessions, staff meetings, and other events as assigned.
  • Maintain familiarity with the district initiatives to better serve the needs of students.

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

 

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED), adaptive equipment, standard office equipment, computer and peripherals
  • Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting
  • Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension
  • Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through appropriate physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students
  • Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases
  • Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
