Painter I (Entry Level)
Position Summary
An employee in this classification performs routine painting tasks to decorate and protect surfaces by applying paint, varnish, stain, or enamel. Work is generally repetitive, follows established procedures, and is completed under the direct supervision of a supervisor or crew leader. Problems beyond routine are referred to a supervisor.
Illustrative Examples of Work

Prepares surfaces by smoothing, sanding, and cleaning.

Removes old finishes (paint, varnish, stain) from surfaces.

Fills holes, cracks, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers.

Removes fixtures (e.g., switch and outlet covers) prior to painting.

Protects work areas by spreading drop cloths and masking windows, door frames, baseboards, and furnishings.

Erects scaffolding or sets ladders as needed to perform tasks above ground level.

Selects from pre-mixed paints (and mixes/thins as directed).

Applies coatings by brush, roller, or sprayer to achieve an even finish.

Cleans and maintains brushes, rollers, sprayers, and other tools after use; maintains a tidy work area.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Basic knowledge of standard practices, materials, and methods of the painting trade.

Skill in the safe use and care of brushes, rollers, sprayers, ladders, and related equipment.

Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions and to work safely using appropriate PPE.

Ability to prepare surfaces properly and apply coatings to a uniform finish.

Physical ability to perform manual tasks, including standing, bending, climbing, and handling materials and equipment.
Suggested Training and Experience

Some previous painting experience is preferred.
