Job Description

 

POSITION: Itinerant Academic Coach

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Deputy Superintendent for Instructional Support & Building Principal. Locations to be assigned. 

 

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

 

Pursuant to West Virginia Code, if a current JCS employee is selected as a finalist for this position, the employee is not eligible to transfer until the 2026–2027 school year. 

 

 

EMPLOYMENT TERM: Minimum 200 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18-5-45; extended employment terms by be established by the JCBOE. Contract is 210 days.

 

SALARY:  Pursuant to WV Code § l8A-4-2, in accordance with Jefferson County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level.  Position is contingent upon available Federal Funding

 

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code § l8A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and JCBOE Evaluation Policy

 

JOB SUMMARY: The Academic Coach provides high-quality information and research-based guidance to instructional staff members and demonstrates effective teaching techniques in classrooms to improve teacher quality and student learning in Jefferson County Schools. This position serves an important role in improving student achievement through building educators’ capacity and understanding of instructional practices.  

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

                 

  • Articulates a clear instructional vision alongside the principal, at locations to be assigned, with a school-wide focus on teaching and learning that is data-driven, standards-aligned, and rooted in a belief that all students can achieve at high levels.
  • Directly influences student learning and teacher practices by working with principals and colleagues to implement effective strategies based on exemplary practices.
  • Analyze data continuously to inform instructional decisions. Develops teachers’ capacity to collect and analyze multiple sources of data to improve student learning.
  • Collaborate with grade-level and content-based teams to analyze data and plan effective curricular initiatives and interventions.
  • Model and collaborate with teachers in planning, implementing effective teaching and learning strategies, and providing feedback for instructional staff.
  • Team teach with teachers in demonstrating and modeling high-yield instructional practices, strategies, and resources.
  • Provide consistent consultation regarding effective, research-based instructional strategies, curricula, and resources.
  • Meet with teachers and collaborative teams to facilitate lesson and unit planning.
  • Observe teachers for coaching and feedback on instructional practice and strategies.
  • Design and implement whole-group and job-embedded professional development related to content, pedagogy, and other educational topics as required.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Contribute to a school culture in which continuous improvement and a focus on improving student outcomes is acknowledged as critical work for all staff. Educators feel comfortable in reaching out for support in their improvement efforts.
  • Consistently coordinate improvement efforts with other instructional coaches, administrators, and specialists at the school and district level, ensuring effective use of grade-level standards-based instruction
  • Attends professional development meetings, trainings, and all events led by the Curriculum and Instruction Department.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Professional Teaching Certificate with a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction or related educational field
  • Have no fewer than five (5) years of successful teaching experience with an expert understanding of effective teaching strategies and curriculum knowledge
  • Have thorough knowledge and understanding of the West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards for assigned programmatic level
  • Have thorough knowledge and understanding of West Virginia Professional Teaching Standards to support high-quality instructional practices in all classrooms
  • Have thorough knowledge and understanding of the analysis of performance and assessment data, including West Virginia General Summative Assessments, interim assessments, STAR, and other formative and summative assessments, to facilitate meaningful interpretation and decision making to impact teaching and learning
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills and strong collaborative skills
  • Ability to maintain a commitment to professional ethics and standards

 

Preferred Qualifications: Certification in Educational Administration

WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/ technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
