Home Campus: IAHS (fully on-site)

Partner’s Camus: May require to travel to St Joe’s Villa, Wentworth Height, Tansley Wood

Rate of Pay: $17.60 per hour, plus 4% in lieu of vacation

Job Summary

Reporting to the Program Manager, Nursing, this position will be responsible for the daily set-up, take down, use and maintenance of all practice equipment for the Nursing Studies programs at the IAHS. This incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining equipment and lab spaces at the offsite lab locations and the Living Classrooms as required. The incumbent will be responsible for the operation of audio-visual equipment used to facilitate Skills Checks and other lab activities. In addition, the incumbent will provide administrative support to coordinate inventory, equipment maintenance and the organization of storage spaces. The incumbent will implement recommendations to support faculty and students during practice, assessment and peer-to-peer situations. Administrative duties to support the Nursing Studies programs including, but not limited to accreditation, procedures etc. will also be a focus of this incumbent, ensuring standards are clear, acknowledged, transparent, and actions/updates are implemented by way of communication and organizing working groups/committees/advisory teams which are struck to support ongoing and new lab initiatives.

What you’ll be doing:

Lab Equipment and Supplies Support

  •  Prepares, setup, take down, maintenance and storage of equipment and supplies for labs.
  •  Prepares lab space including audiovisual support, video production equipment and other types of media for content delivery.
  •  Incumbent prepares and cleans environment before and after lab activity.
  •  Incumbent refreshes lab equipment and supplies between lab sessions
  •  Utilizes and maintains medical equipment such as IV pumps, blood pressure cuffs, feeding pumps, etc.
  •  Collaborates with faculty to maintain up-to-date Lab Equipment and Supply lists.
  •  Install new equipment as required following appropriate vendor training.
  •  Coordinates preventative maintenance of all lab equipment.
  •  Coordinates timely repair of lab equipment.
  •  Provides cost-effective alternative parts solutions in collaboration with Lab Manager
  •  Maintains a variety of records related to lab operations and equipment.
  •  Maintains and provides security for supplies, materials and equipment in the laboratory, stores, discards and rotates supplies and materials according to procedures.
  •  Maintains and updates lab to include, but not limited to identifying software, supply and equipment needs, troubleshooting and resolving problems.
  •  Assist with inventory management of soft supplies and assets.
  •  Maintains organization of storage room and areas
  •  Provides support in the Clinical Skills Labs and Open/Supervised Lab for students and faculty to practice competencies and skills in meeting course objectives.
  •  Coordinates and supports lab activities at off-site labs, including the Living Classrooms as needed.
  •  Provides recommendation for lab improvements in collaboration with simulation team, academic programs and associate deans and director.

Technical Support

  •  Provide technical support in the use of computer-based multimedia systems and their components, including operation of digital cameras, video cameras, audio/video, Learning Space software, monitors, LCD projectors, and other related equipment.
  •  Assist faculty, lab instructors, staff and students in the use of a variety of medical equipment, materials and supplies in an instructional setting, including creating skills videos using Kaltura.
  •  Assist students with accessing LearningSpace software, problem solving any connection issues.
  •  Program clinical skills exams, creating schedules of student flow through on LearningSpace software.
  •  Setup AV equipment to record skills checks.
  •  Incumbent uses CAE management system and other technology to record skills checks saves digital recordings for faculty use and student review as required by the programs.
  •  Perform pre-lab activities including powering up equipment, patient monitors, AV equipment and other electronic equipment and test to ensure proper function prior to each lab session.
  •  Stock patient rooms and equipment carts with supplies and equipment needed for specific lab objectives, including medications, doctors’ orders etc.
  •  Operates instructional media equipment such as video camera, multimedia computer systems and audio video distribution systems.
  •  Receives, sets up, and tests new multimedia and computer equipment as required.
  •  Incumbent works with IT and product vendors to problem-solve around equipment malfunction or required upgrades.
  •  Maintain a clean and safe learning lab environment.
  •  Restores laboratory to pre-set-up conditions as required.

Administrative Support – Procedural

  •  Attend meetings with lab staff and faculty.
  •  Evaluate new equipment and identify opportunities for technology improvement and integration into healthcare education by proactively seeking existing and emerging technologies including basic theory, design and implementation.
  •  Enters information into software management system for standardized patient simulations.
  •  Participate in technical training as necessary; to stay current with healthcare education and technology.
  •  Provide support and orientations to faculty and staff on tours of the clinical skills labs.
  •  Explains to learners the use of patient care and medical equipment and related media and computer equipment.
  •  Provide support to standardized patients.
  •  Complete troubleshooting documents, checklists, and preventative maintenance plans for lab equipment.
  •  Collaborate as part of the inventory control team to ensure adequate supplies are available for upcoming labs and simulations.
  •  Ensures student compliance (and faculty awareness) with lab policies, procedures, and safety precautions.
  •  Assist with external requests for tours of Clinical Skills Labs.
  •  Implements operating procedures in collaboration with Director, Simulation Team and academic programs.
  •  Maintains laboratory schedule, attendance records, and tracks laboratory usage administrative duties to support the Nursing labs including, but not limited to accreditation/procedures/working groups/committees/advisory teams etc.
  •  Ensuring standards are clear, acknowledged, transparent, and actions/updates are implemented by way of communication and organizing teams which are struck to support ongoing and new initiatives.

Professional Development

  •  Keeps aware of updates in medical equipment, new product development and innovation of equipment to meet a variety of learning needs.
  •  Consults with agency staff and product vendors.
  •  Update in computer skills.
  •  Participates in technical training as necessary.

Maintenance

  •  Install new hardware and software on lab equipment.
  •  Perform upgrades as necessary.
  •  Perform operational checks on equipment.
  •  Interface with the equipment manufacturers to troubleshoot system problems.
  •  Consult with IT technical support; oversee scheduled maintenance.
  •  Ensure warranties and service agreements are up to date, arranging for preventative maintenance as required.
  •  Participates in technical training as necessary.
  •  Keep accurate records and logs of maintenance completed.
  •  Arrange for remediation and repair of lab equipment when necessary. I.e. IV pumps, blood pressure cuffs.

Other Duties as assigned (including, but not limited)

  •  Works with Simulation team to ensure timely ordering of all supplies, equipment maintenance and upgrading required.
  •  Orients students, new faculty, new staff and visitors to the clinical skills labs.
  •  Participates in Campus Open Houses and similar events to showcase the Nursing labs.
  •  Attends Nursing Studies team meetings, Simulation team meetings and all staff meetings as required.
  •  Assist with special projects and external events.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  •  Minimum 1 Year Certificate in the following disciplines: Healthcare, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field or equivalent combination of related education and work experience preferred.
  •  Minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience.
  •  Strong competency working with computers and comfortable learning new software programs.
  •  Previous experience and demonstrated skill working with Audio Visual Equipment.
  •  Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  •  Ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.
  •  Ability to multitask and prioritize.
  •  Prior experience with a Learning Management System (E.g.) My Canvas considered an asset.
  •  Prior experience with Simulation Based Technology (CAE Learning Space, Laerdal Leap) considered an asset.
  •  Gaumard Uni, CAE Maestro & Muse, Wasp experience considered an asset.
  •  Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
