Under direct supervision, this position maintains and manages a caseload of wide range of complexity, applying critical thinking and sound judgment to establish, modify, enforce, and collect child support obligations, ensuring the best possible outcomes for each case while adhering to both Colorado state and federal guidelines. These Specialists are involved in a range of key service areas, including Accounting, Intake, Enforcement, Establishment, and Modification, working collaboratively to meet the needs of each individual case.

Salary Range: $27.91 - 35.17/hour

Position Duties

  • Adheres to departmental policies and procedures, customer service standards, and compliance guidelines.

  • Ensures cases are compliant with Colorado Revised Statutes, court records and other regulations governing the child support program.

  • Prepares legal documents for attorney use in court hearings and manage follow-up documentation processing.

  • Researches, analyzes, and interprets court orders and financial documents to calculate child support amounts and arrears.

  • Collaborates with counties, states, tribes, international jurisdictions, and other Human Services agencies to establish and enforce support orders for parentage, financial, and medical support.

  • Monitors and verifies case activity to ensure timely and appropriate processing.

  • Updates and maintains case information in Automated Child Support Enforcement System (ACSES) and Electronic Document Management System.

  • Maintains a detailed, chronological case history including work performed, interactions, and legal or administrative decisions.

  • Enters data through multiple County and State computer systems requiring detailed, specific program knowledge. 

  • Conducts locate functions to gather contact, employment, and financial information to determine monthly support obligations.

  • Manages day-to-day communication with clients, employers, and agencies, responding to inquiries and providing accurate explanations of child support regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure case updates and compliance.

  • Ascertains barriers and makes referrals for additional services as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma/GED - required

Experience

  • 1 year experience working with the public in a professional office or administrative position - required

After one year, Child Support Specialist I is eligible to be promoted to Child Support Specialist II.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (in addition to above requirements):

New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: in-person or virtual interviews, reference checks, and background checks, which may include local police check, DMV check, and sex-offender registry.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record for continued employment.

  • Fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI required.

  • Central Registry/TRAILS check.

  • Child Support Registry check.

Other Qualifications

  • Work is generally scheduled Monday through Friday with some evening and weekend hours.  

  • Work is performed at City/County work locations with the ability to perform some duties remotely in accordance with Broomfield’s remote work policy and approval by the supervisor/manager.

  • Tasks may require the use of a computer for several hours

  • Regular, predictable attendance required

  • The noise level in the environment is moderate.  

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

  • The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  

  • Physical demands are described as sedentary (exert up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. 

  • Travel by automobile is required to attend court and meetings.
