GENERAL STATEMENT
Working under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, USU Recreation and Services, the position is responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the Games Center, Esports Lounge, and USU Information/Ticket Center to run efficiently and effectively. This includes assisting in managing student employees, volunteers, assisting with organizing events, tournaments, and ensuring high quality gaming and service experience for CSULB students and the CSULB general campus community. Assist with general development and coordination of student employees, volunteers and communication of the Commercial Services department. This role requires a strong background in e-sports and exceptional organizational and communication skills and independent decision making. This position will require the incumbent to work some evening and weekend events on and off campus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assist with the day-to-day operations of USU recreation and leisure service programs, including USU retail, bowling, billiards, esports, table tennis, Information Center, ticket sales and copy center. Assist with the supervision of evening and weekend operations. Provides operational and customer service training for all employees withing the commercial services department.
- Supervises, trains, and schedules student staff at the temporary off-campus location at Sports Basement. Ensures safety and risk protocols are followed.
- Assist with the promotion of USU recreational facilities and amenities to an- and off-campus groups. Assist with scheduling the use of games center facilities.
- Plans and collaborates with Assistant Director with events, student staff, setup, and customer service. Assist in resolving group and individual concerns, helps assess risk and with on-site emergencies.
- Assist in the development, planning, coordinating and implementation of special programs, bowling, recreation tournaments, bowling leagues, esports, esports tournaments and special events. This will include going off-campus.
- Assist in the planning and coordination for community gaming, including open lab usage, events and tournaments.
- Recruits in attracting talented players to participate in esports events and leagues.
- Works in collaboration with ASI departments and campus partners to ensure recreation and leisure services are well balanced, coordinated, and integrated with campus services. Assist in the development and maintaining relations with other recreation providers in the campus community.
- Studies campus conditions and recommend immediate and long-range plans to meet recreational needs of students. Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of recreation areas, facilities, and services. Assist in monitoring utilization of various services to assist in program development. Studies local area and college markets.
- Collaborates with ASI Communications for all communication efforts for on and off campus marketing to increase student services and revenue generation to third parties.
- Assist in the budget preparation, expenditure of department funds, and maintenance of department records. Assist in the purchase of equipment, services, and retail products from outside vendors, and assist in monitoring inventory.
- Assist in the development or updates of inventory operating strategies, plans, or procedures. Assist in reconciling and collaborating with ASI Business Office ensuring cash handling policies are followed.
- Assist in the selection, training, development, and evaluation of student staff. Assist in the supervision of the activities of day, weekend and evening staff for event assistance, security, and department operations.
- Trains, and assist in programming point of sales system for student employees.
- Works collaboratively with Student Auxiliary Enterprises IT for compliance and implementation.
- Assist in writing and/or updates operations manual for departments to include day-to-day procedures. Assist in instructing student staff in the operation and care of materials and equipment used in the department.
- Assist in troubleshooting service equipment such as cash registers, personal computers, printers, monitors, etc. Works collaborative with facilities maintenance on bowling lanes maintenance.
- Stays on top of any new candy or snack preferences in the food and beverage market and ensures meeting student demand and mix.
- Provides general customer service for the University Student Union Information Center, including email, phone, text, and chat messaging with guests. Assist in the oversight of general email and Live Support on-line chat function on corporate website.
- Assists manager as needed with special projects, corporate wide events and serves on campus wide committees as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree or equivalent from four-year college or university in recreations/leisure studies, behavioral sciences, business or public administration, or related field; and two to four years related experience in recreational services, activities coordination, college union operations or comparable occupation; or equivalent combination or education, training, and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- California Driver's License necessary as incumbent will drive university vehicles as needed including ASI carts, van and/or truck.
- CPR/First Aid certification is required but can be obtained subsequent to hiring.
- Food Handler Certification and Safety Certificate or ability to complete this certification contingent upon employment.
Knowledge and Abilities
Working knowledge of the basic principles, practices and major trends in the college union/student activities field; ability to rapidly acquire working knowledge of the specific objectives of USU Recreation and Services programs and their relationship to overall campus operations; working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; working knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management; working knowledge of research and interviewing techniques; familiarity with the role of college unions in student development is preferred.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, operating policies, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to write and edit articles, newsletters, press releases, pamphlets, brochures and internal publications. Ability to speak effectively and persuasively before groups of students, volunteers and potential donors. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Schedule
Must be able to work evenings and weekends during the calendar year. Hours during summer and winter breaks are to be determined by supervisor.
