Purpose:

The Insulin Pump Trainer and Diabetes Educator is responsible for providing comprehensive education and support to individuals with diabetes, focusing on insulin pump therapy and overall diabetes management. This role involves working closely with patients, healthcare professionals, and caregivers to promote effective diabetes self-management, ensure proper insulin pump usage, and improve overall patient outcomes.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Patient Education: Educate patients and their families on diabetes management, including insulin pump use, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), and other diabetes-related technologies.

Insulin Pump Training: Provide hands-on training for insulin pump setup, programming, and troubleshooting. Guide patients through the transition to insulin pump therapy, ensuring they feel confident and supported.

Diabetes Management: Teach patients about blood glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting, insulin dosage adjustment, and the importance of lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.

Individualized Care Plans: Develop and implement individualized care plans based on each patient’s unique needs, medical history, and lifestyle.

Ongoing Support: Offer follow-up education and support through in-person consultations, phone calls, or virtual visits. Address questions and concerns related to insulin pump use and diabetes management.

Collaboration with Healthcare Providers: Collaborate with endocrinologists, primary care physicians, and other healthcare team members to ensure continuity of care and optimize patient outcomes.

Patient Advocacy: Serve as a patient advocate by helping them navigate insurance, access to medications, and necessary supplies.

Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all patient interactions, training sessions, and follow-up care.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

• Prior experience providing patient education on diabetes and insulin pump therapy.

• Proficiency with various insulin pump and CGM systems.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative in addressing concerns and issues.
• Proficient with computer based applications such as MS Office, Adobe, registries/medical databases, and electronic health record. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Dietetics, or a related healthcare field (or equivalent clinical experience).

• Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) or Certified Insulin Pump Trainer preferred.

• Experience working with insulin pumps and diabetes technology.

• Strong knowledge of diabetes pathophysiology, treatment options, and patient education techniques.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with patients and healthcare providers.

• Ability to deliver complex information in a clear, compassionate, and patient-friendly manner.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
