Position Duties

The General Facility Maintenance Worker performs routine custodial, building, and grounds maintenance duties to ensure the safe, clean, and efficient operation of the Doug Woog Ice Arena. This position supports facility operations, event preparation, and assists staff and patrons as needed. Work is performed under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Director and Lead Facility Maintenance or designee.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, restroom cleaning, locker room cleaning, trash removal, and general sanitation.
  • Perform light building maintenance such as painting, minor repairs, changing light fixtures, and replacing filters.
  • Maintain ice surface including resurfacing, edging, and cleaning dasher boards, glass, and player areas.
  • Operate maintenance equipment including ice resurfacing machines, hand tools, and power tools safely and in compliance with training.
  • Set up and tear down equipment and seating for events, programs, and rentals.
  • Perform snow/ice removal and light groundskeeping around the facility.
  • Monitor facility safety and security; report hazards or repair needs promptly.
  • Provide courteous assistance to patrons and ensure compliance with facility rules.
  • Follow City, State of Minnesota, and federal workplace safety standards including OSHA requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year experience and knowledge of custodial practices, facility maintenance, and use of cleaning chemicals and tools.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions in English.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment such as floor scrubbers, vacuums, and ice re-surfacers (training provided).
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, reaching, standing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous ice arena experience, including operation of a Zamboni.
  • Experience working in a municipal, recreational, or public facility setting.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to cold temperatures on the ice rink, cleaning chemicals, noise, and occasional incisional inclement weather.
  • Requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as provided by the City.

Employment Requirements

  • Employment is subject to a background check in compliance with City policy and applicable state/federal law.
  • Must complete required safety and equipment training.
  • This position is part of the Teamsters bargaining unit and is subject to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
