Position Summary

The Animal Control Officer is responsible for enforcing local control laws and ordinances to protect both the community and its animals. This position safeguards the health and safety of the public by responding to animal-related calls, investigating complaints, and capturing and impounding stray or dangerous animals. Protects personnel and animals by taking animals into custody, explaining and enforcing regulations with the public. The officer also provides education on responsible pet ownership, supports animal welfare initiatives, and ensures compliance with applicable regulations under Tigua Inc.'s jurisdiction.

Roles and Responsibilities:

 

  • Responds to routine inquiries and complaints concerning animal problems or violations of animal control ordinances, including but not limited to animals running at large, bites, property damage, or injuries; maintains effective and efficient public relations when dealing with citizens. 
  • Investigate violations of animal control ordinances and issue warnings or citations as required. 
  • Investigates complaints of unwanted or escaped animals or those causing nuisances; captures and transports animals to the animal shelter. 
  • It maintains normal availability by radio or telephone for consultations on major emergencies or routine Animal Control questions. 
  • Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, state, county and city laws and ordinances. 
  • Maintains contact with supervisory personnel to coordinate investigative activities, provides mutual assistance during emergency situations and provides general information about Animal Control activities. 
  • Prepares daily, monthly, and annual reports of activities; prepares and maintains records. 
  • Oversee the maintenance of county’s shelter equipment including officer equipment; maintains inventory. 
  • Participates in emergency rabies control programs and organizes rabies clinics. 
  • Operates various equipment including assigned vehicle, animal capture equipment (traps, catch poles), radio, cellular phone, first aid equipment, self-defense weapons (spray, etc), baton, bite stick and computer. 
  • Adheres to safe work practices and procedures. 
  • Maintains all assigned equipment to ensure proper functioning. 
  • Ensures that individuals and team meet goals and provide highest level of service. 
  • Drives vehicle to perform one or more essential functions. 
  • Performs other duties of a similar or related level as necessary or assigned.

 

Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must pass a criminal history background check in accordance with DODI 1402-5
  • Must be a U.S.A. citizen or authorized to work in the United States or possess a valid U.S. Immigration T-151 or I-94
  • Shall possess a valid U.S. state driver’s license
  • Able to read, write, and speak the English language fluently
  • Must obtain and maintain current Texas State Animal Control Officer Basic Training Course certification 

Certification must be taken and passed withing three months of acceptance of position

Physical and Technical Environment:                                                                                

  • Ability to lift and carry animals, equipment, and cages weighing up to 75 lbs.
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, crawling, and kneeling in various indoor/outdoor environments.
  • Capability to pursue and safely capture animals on foot, including running short distances.
  • Proficient in the safe use of animal control equipment (e.g., catch poles, traps, tranquilizer equipment, leashes, cages).
  • Familiarity with applicable federal, state, local, and tribal animal control laws and ordinances.
  • Basic computer skills for report writing, database entry, and use of handheld devices for tracking and logging.
