About the Department
Under general supervision, travels to and from 6 Environmental Sustainable (ES) Centers. Assists residents with household hazardous waste, residential recycling, and other hard-to-recycle items while educating them on safe handling practices and environmental sustainability. Accepts, sorts, segregates, and packs hazardous and non-hazardous materials for proper disposal or transportation. Maintains ES Centers in a neat, clean, and organized condition. Develops educational materials and safety documentation to promote proper waste handling. May assist with educational outreach at public events. Works with the Environmental Health Supervisors to ensure safe operations while providing resources for residents to practice environmental sustainability.
This is a full-time, benefited position. Typical working hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.
Position Duties
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Under the direction of the Environmental Sustainability Supervisor, sorts, classifies, and packages household hazardous waste received at ES Centers while educating residents on safe handling practices.
- Performs basic maintenance items and conducts routine inspections of the entire site to ensure operational and infrastructural integrity.
- Schedules services and identifies repair needs for gates, HHW units, mowing, and other site systems. Coordinates efforts with Supervisor, Site Attendants, and Specialists, as needed.
- Maintains records and inventory of items at sites to ensure proper timing of pick-ups, service requests, and stock levels of ES Centers.
- Opens, closes, and staffs ES Centers during scheduled operating hours.
- Receives recyclables, hard-to-recycle items, and household hazardous waste from customers; assists with unloading; provides memberships and receipts payments; educates on proper disposal methods; and places materials in appropriate receptacles.
- Removes snow and ice from walkways, stairs, accessways, and other areas of the site that snow removal services cannot access, ensuring safe customer access.
- Maintains work areas in a neat, clean, and safe condition while developing safety documentation and educational materials.
- Classifies and segregates hazardous wastes as corrosives, poisons, and flammables; ensures proper containment, sealing, and labeling; logs source and nature of hazardous materials; and places them in proper storage units.
- Assists with educational outreach at public events to promote environmental sustainability and safe waste handling practices, such as composting, scrap metal recycling, and electronics recycling programs.
- Updates paperwork and works on Materials Management Plan (MMP) items to support ES Center operations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED combined with college coursework, professional certification, or specialized training in environmental science, hazardous materials, chemistry, biology, building maintenance, or related fields. Associate's or Bachelor's degree from a U.S.-accredited college or university, preferably in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Public Health, or Biology preferred, but not required.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Must have a valid motor vehicle license.
- Must possess (within 8 months of the date of hire) and maintain valid 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
Employees interested in advancing to higher-level positions within Environmental Sustainability would benefit from obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Public Health, or related field. Additional certifications in hazardous materials management, environmental compliance, or specialized recycling programs enhance advancement opportunities. Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of safety practices for hazardous materials processing.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong customer service and communication skills with diverse populations.
- Basic mathematical skills for recording weights and volumes.
- Ability to learn and use new technology as necessary to communicate effectively and record all required data.
- Ability to effectively and continually communicate with EPH Supervisors throughout the work week to inform of conditions, needs, and report out.
Physical Requirements:
- Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to read markings and labels on hazardous waste containers and Material Safety Data Sheets.
- Must be able to descend to and ascend from floor and ground level to remove litter and contain small spills.
- Must be able to pass a fit test to be able to wear at least a full-face and/or half-facepiece and/or N-95.
- Must have sufficient strength to remove snow from walkways and other areas with manual shovels as well as with snow blowers.
- Must be able to move recyclable containers weighing up to 50 lbs. with or without mechanical or other assistance.
- Must be able to move large containers of hazardous waste with the use of a barrel dolly or pallet jack which requires vigorous pushing and pulling.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, and other airborne contaminants, as well as inclement weather.
- Must be able to wear all required safety clothing and equipment.
Working Conditions:
While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is at risk of exposure to hazardous materials, although actual exposure is normally limited to small spills in the center and the employee follows standard safety protocols. Employee is frequently exposed to outdoor environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, humidity, precipitation, dust, dirt, and airborne particulates.
