 Summary/Objective

Specimen processing is responsible for, receiving, sorting, centrifuging and aliquoting specimens per label instruction. Packaging and shipping specimens according to IATA regulations. Processing 24hour urines, urine cytology’s and flow cytometry’s. Routing specimens in house to different departments in a timely manner to ensure specimen integrity and stability and preparing to send-out specimens for the reference labs. Pulling/placing orders in Epic and Softlab, Resolving and identifying errors when the test that’s ordered do not match the specimen received or there is missing information. Must have mental alertness and high energy required to appropriately perform all job functions while maintain a professional demeanor at all times.

Essential Functions

• Be able to stand for long periods of time

• Accurate data entry skills in verifying correct patient information and correct labeling of specimens

• Ability to organize and work independently in a high volume assigned area

• Ability to effectively work well with others and have good interpersonal skills

• Make independent decisions and exercise constant sound judgment

• Meet quality and production standards within training completion

• Report to work on time and adhere to the attendance guidelines as to not cause staffing issues

• Complete all written documentation as to resolve any issues or concerns with patient care

• Understand HIPPA as it relates to your job performance

• Adheres to all safety standards in the handling of biohazard specimens

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Lifting - Must be able to lift above shoulder height up to 10 lbs. as needed. In addition, must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis.  For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly or cart must be utilized.

Pushing/Pulling - Must be able to push/pull up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly or cart must be utilized.

Carry weight, lift -  Must be able to carry supplies, slide trays, and reagents weighing up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly or cart must be utilized.

Bending/Twisting/Stooping - Must be able to bend/twist/stoop for entire shift in order to file slides/blocks and store specimens and supplies.

Sitting/Standing - Must be able to stand for several hours in duration. Sitting is appropriate based on workload volume and work being performed.

Smells - Ability to tolerate strong odors when working with toxic chemicals

Dexterity - Must be able to perform a large amount of repetitive hand movements by utilizing computers and opening/closing specimen containers. Ability to follow all safety guidelines and safely handle biohazardous specimens and toxic chemicals.

Travel

Daily travel is expected for this position to corporate sites and other locations in which specimens, blocks, and/or slides are being picked up or delivered. A current driver's license, auto insurance, and reliable transportation is required.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience: High school diploma required


Preferred Education and Experience: A minimum of one year experience in a laboratory processing or medical environment


Additional Eligibility Qualifications: Basic knowledge of medical terminology and data entry skills. Knowledge of specimen collection, specimen requirements, specimen integrity and specimen storage and handling
