Want to engage youth and adult community members of all ages to imagine, create, and collaborate onstage and off? Join our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources team as a drama instructor. Our mission at the Town of Cary is to focus every day on enriching the lives of our citizens by creating an exceptional environment and providing exemplary services that enable our community to thrive and prosper. Under the direction of the Performing Arts Education Specialist, the Drama Instructor will serve as a stage manager, scenery & props coordinator, or costume coordinator role on Applause! Cary Youth Theatre’s mainstage productions. 

Currently seeking drama instructors with weekday, daytime availability and/or weekend, weeknight availability with experience teaching students ages 8-18 to work as production staff on mainstage youth theatre productions. Ideal candidates are specialized in one or more of the following areas: stage management, costume design and construction, or scenery and props design and construction.

This position will have a variable work schedule including some weekdays, evenings, weekends and occasional holidays as needed.

All applicants are required to attach a sample lesson plan for a drama class of an age of your choosing (PreK, K-1, 2-3, 4-5, middle, high, adult, senior) that highlights your unique skillset/interests. Attach lesson plan to your application or copy & paste. 

This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year. 

Position Duties

  • Lead youth and/or teen participants in the development of mainstage theatre productions as a stage manager, scenery & props coordinator, or costume coordinator including auditions, rehearsals, and production process
  • Design theatre programs and lesson plans for youth participants
  • Collaborate with other staff on special projects
  • Prepare, teach and evaluate assigned instructional courses
  • Implement new teaching strategies as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate records of students' attendance and performance
  • Communicate with production staff in a timely and professional manner
  • Submit reports in accurate and timely manner
  • Adhere to/enforce policies and procedures
  • Keep students advised of their progress in class
  • Perform other job-related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • General knowledge of theatre styles, classroom management, and educational theatre
  • Specialized knowledge and experience in one or more backstage theatre area (i.e. sets, props, costumes, stage management
  • Ability to remain organized with a keen attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively and promptly both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with students and staff
  • Ability to use teaching methods that engage students and encourage them. 

Other Qualifications

Education and Experience

Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Theatre, Theatre for Youth, or Theatre Education and a minimum of 1 year of experience working with youth (from preschool age to high school) in a theatre or school setting.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess any of the following:

  • A master’s degree in Directing, Theatre for Youth, Theatre or related performing arts field.
  • Extensive background in theatre with experience in acting/performance, directing, theatre production, stage management, technical theatre, dance education and choreography, and devised theatre.

Physical Requirements 
Work in this class requires an employee to be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction.  An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely in order to interact with patrons. Requires the ability to lift moderately heavy items (up to 25 lbs.) Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal. Work in this class may require sitting and use of a computer.
