About the Department

Transit Management of Spartanburg is currently hiring a Full Time Mechanic. Under general supervision of the working supervisor, performs preventative maintenance, trouble shoots and repairs Sparta vehicles, equipment, and buildings.

Position Duties

• Repairs and/or replaces bus and automotive body accessories (door engines, electrical units, glass, windshield wipers, seats, wheelchair lifts, etc.).

• Repairs and/or replaces diesel and gasoline engine accessories as may be required.

• Does minor welding on buses and equipment.

• Performs electrical repairs on SPARTA equipment. Analyzes and utilizes diagrams for repairs.

• Trouble shoots problems with motors and air conditioning. Trouble shoots mechanical and electrical problems on buses.

• Works on and maintains fare boxes and collection equipment. Repairs transmissions. Repairs destination signs. Works on bus lift equipment and kneeling devices.

• Rebuilds engine parts and other bus parts such as brakes, alternators, differentials, etc.

• Repairs all SPARTA vehicles (gas and diesel) including repairs to air conditioners, motors, transmissions, generators, starters, etc. Makes road calls by driving a SPARTA vehicle.

• Trouble shoots vehicular problems including electrical systems, engines, etc.

• Fuels buses. Performs duties of other Purchasing/Stores personnel as needed. Enters data into computer as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED, prior diesel experience, steady work record, and a clean driving record.  Maintenance Certifications and CDL with Passenger endorsement are a PLUS.  

This is a full time position 40 hours a week with benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life) after 90 days.  Paid vacation and sick time.  

Hours may vary. Monday - Friday 5am - 4pm

Wage scale is $20 - $25 dollars an hour depending on experience.

MENTAL EFFORTS – Requires ability to handle numerous activities at one time.

PHYSICAL  --  Extensive walking, standing and sitting is required.  Must be able to climb on a ladder or other equipment up to heights such as roof of buildings at SPARTA facility.  Requires ability to withstand exposure to negative surroundings, such as uncomfortable weather conditions, dust, engine fumes, toxic chemicals, and extreme noise levels.  May be required to lift or push 50 lbs.  Requires ability to perform hand-over-hand method of steering vehicles and be able to grip a steering wheel.

AUDIBLE/VISUAL DEMANDS --  Requires ability to hear  and understand directions over telephone and/or two way radio.  Visually perform essential functions for satisfactory job performance.  Ability to view visual display terminal.
