Education & Engagement Coordinator: Full Time
Position Summary
GrowNYC Education cultivates agency among city communities and residents to access and actively participate in waste diversion behaviors, like composting and recycling. GrowNYC Education also delivers educational programming across several program areas to a wide range of city residents in all five boroughs. The Education & Engagement Coordinator will work independently to improve waste diversion behaviors and practices citywide and ultimately help divert recyclable and compostable waste from landfills. This position is a hybrid field and office-based position requiring an intermediate level of experience supporting stakeholders with recycling/composting education and waste operations help.
Requirements
Education & Engagement Coordinator Responsibilities (Including but not limited to):
Outreach & Engagement
- Deliver targeted educational outreach in residential buildings and medium to high density neighborhoods throughout New York City.
- Conduct site visits to residential buildings and other establishments (businesses, institutions) to identify current waste management systems and strategize actionable next steps the building can take towards waste reduction and/or diversion.
- Facilitate trainings with building management, staff, and residents to discuss DSNY recycling and composting regulations, why waste reduction and diversion is important, and how to successfully participate in these municipal services.
- Provide responsive resources to facilitate active participation from all key stakeholders to ensure they are informed of the available recycling and composting services and NYC’s recycling and composting mandates.
- Empower New Yorkers to participate in municipal recycling and composting services and build capacity within their communities.
- Provide target recommendations to city institutions and establishments on key waste reduction and diversion strategies
- Provide technical assistance to ensure stakeholders know how to acquire and set up waste infrastructure, and troubleshoot operational challenges as they arise.
- Establish and implement applicable methods for communicating information on waste and sustainability to NYC residents and establishments in a way that fosters behavior change.
- Communicate and encourage the use of special waste disposal protocols, missed collection protocols, and any other DSNY priority communications (escalating to relevant partners when necessary).
- Conduct compliance visits to address residences flagged by DSNY for non-compliance with city waste set out regulations.
- Organize and facilitate occasional community events.
Administrative & Reporting
- Establish strong lines of communication with stakeholders and provide follow-up resources and materials after site visits.
- Collect data on building waste stream capture rates and contamination rates through surveys to evaluate successes and opportunities for improvement.
- Submit data for completed outreach including visit type, location, number of stakeholders engaged, and notes about the outreach.
- Timely completion of weekly and monthly reports including site visits, timesheets, outreach highlights, images, and reimbursements.
- Contribute data and program updates for GrowNYC Education’s various internal and external communications and reports, i.e. newsletter, social media, and internal reports.
- Actively participate in team meetings to share work and provide support to GrowNYC Education team members.
Research & Material Development
- Develop educational materials for key stakeholders to learn how to effectively participate in waste diversion services in the city. Examples of materials include: flyers, postcards, presentations, guides, communication templates, and activities.
- Utilize provided services to translate GrowNYC materials to better serve all New Yorkers.
- Update existing GrowNYC educational materials to ensure cultural relevancy and accuracy as new data becomes available, developing new materials when gaps are identified.
- Conduct research to build upon knowledge of the issues, strengthen engagement strategies, and enhance the quality of outreach provided to the communities we serve.
All Programs
- Provide relevant program updates to share with education programs and cultivate a sense of community in the workplace.
- Collaborate with education staff to envision and enact new ways of reaching overarching program goals and improve efficacy of existing program models.
Qualifications
- 1-3 years of experience in community outreach, engagement and relationship management.
- Passionate about helping the environment through encouraging sustainability behaviors.
- Comfortable with public speaking, both virtually and in-person
- Valid NYS drivers’ license.
- Fluency in Spanish is ideal but not required.
Physical Requirements
Programming takes place citywide, often requiring travel to and from program sites, long-hours on your feet, and the ability to lift and carry materials necessary for programming. The ability to lift and carry supplies up to 50lbs and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Schedule
This position is full-time (35-40 hours per week), Monday-Friday, field-based position with some work from home and in-office time as needed. Occasional evening/weekend hours may be required with advance notice.
Compensation
This position is full time and non-exempt. The salary range is $55,000- $60,000 per year and includes full benefits upon meeting the waiting period (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, incentive savings plan, paid time off, Public Service Loan Forgiveness available to employees) Where travel throughout the city is an essential component of job duties, a metrocard will be provided. This position is funded through June 2026. This position is union eligible.
Location
This position is primarily a field-based role requiring travel within the 5 boroughs of New York City for approximately 80% of the work week. The remainder of the time is hybrid in the office with a mandatory office presence on Wednesdays.
