About the Role

The Lead Surgical Technologists is an allied health professional, who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. The Lead Surgical Tech work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. This Lead Surgical Tech shall possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. 

POSITION’S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Works closely with surgeons, OR Team Leads and Clinical Managers on day-to-day operations. 
  • Coordinates/collaborates with department educator to develop staff development plans for unit. 
  • Coordinate with service specific team lead, sales representatives and OR materials management for specialty equipment, implants, instruments, and supplies. 
  • Coordinates with materials to contact vendors regarding supplies, instrumentation, and needs of cases. 
  • Coordinates with Sterile Processing Department to ensure accuracy of instruments, appropriate instrumentation allocation, and priority processing of instruments needed for procedures. 
  • Works with charge RN for schedule coordination, staffing assignments, daily duties, and rotations. 
  • Creates/updates surgeon preference cards. 
  • Ensuring that all preference cards are correct and up to date. 
  • Verify accuracy of case postings. 
  • Verify cases have been pulled and accuracy of case pulls. 
  • Verify equipment needs for cases. 
  • Verify room setup. 
  • Mentor and teach new surgical technologists to the Operating Room and RNs rotating through a specialty (within the scrub role. 
  • Acts as a resource for staff daily. 
  • All other duties as assigned. 

STERILE PROCESSING DUTIES: 

  • Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies, and equipment, and assembles, wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments. 
  • Performs instrument scanning from SPD to the OR, OR to the patient, and then from the patient back to SPD. 
  • Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas. 
  • Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment. 
  • Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards. 

SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST DUTIES: 

  • Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed. 
  • Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure. 
  • Ensures that all instrumentation and supplies are available and ready before the patient arrives in the operating room. 
  • Verifies that equipment functions properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair, or replacement, and removes defective equipment. 
  • Multidisciplinary communication to ensure safe, developmentally appropriate care. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

  • National Sterile Processing Tech Certification OR Certified Scrub Tech required. 
  • 3 Years’ experience as a Surgical Technologist Required. 
  • Two (2) years of experience as a surgical technologist and/or has demonstrated competency in two (2) or more specialty areas.
