Summary
The Cultural Resource Technician (CRT) position is ideally suited for motivated individuals possessing a strong work ethic and enjoy working both independently and as a team member in the fields of archaeology, anthropology, or related disciplines. The CRT will be based out of the Glennallen, AK office and subsequent project assignments will be determined as applicable.
The CRT is employed by the Land and Resources Department while assisting multiple natural and cultural resource partners in the management, improvement, and protection of Ahtna lands and sites, specifically Ahtna cultural and historical sites. Projects will include developing an Ahtna Cultural and Historical Catalog on Ahtna owned lands, primarily within the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve Unit Boundary using available records and reports and creating a catalog of those sites with GPS coordinates and colored photographs.
The CRT is required to perform various fieldwork; therefore, the CRT must successfully complete an All-Terrain Vehicle and Boat operating safety course which can be provided by Ahtna Inc. upon appointment to the position.

The pay range for this position is $29.91-$36.20/hour.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Working with archaeology and anthropology systems and site identification
- Working with and ability to catalogue cultural resources under a protocol
- Working knowledge of various Federal, State and Local laws and regulations related to cultural and historical site preservation
- Monitor Ahtna lands by various modes of transportation including, but not limited to: truck, All-Terrain Vehicles, snow machine, boat, airplane and hiking
- Able to proficiently use Global Positioning System (GPS) during field use
- Able to navigate difficult geographical terrain and associated elements in remote locations in east-central Alaska under potential extreme climatic conditions
- Possesses knowledge of the local flora and fauna
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to resolve customer and staff concerns
- Excellent attention to detail and ability/willingness to follow specific direction and accept constructive criticism
- Exhibit proficient cartography and satellite imagery interpretation skills
- Must be flexible in work hours, including availability for extended workdays and possible overtime
- Ability to safely operate an ATV’s, including loading, unloading and backing trailers
- Understands wilderness survival skills, possesses a general knowledge of cold weather operations for equipment and personnel
- Demonstrate ability to relate to Ahtna Shareholder needs and concerns. The individual must be able to understand and adapt to the requirements of public relations activities in rural Alaska
- Ensures security of land and resources. Monitors for conditions that could result in injury or loss due to fire, flood, and any other man made or natural causes
- Reports to supervisor any unusual or suspicious conditions/behavior detected upon interaction with the public
- Must professionally represent the Ahtna Land and Resource Department with shareholders, business community and the public
- Attend meetings related to Ahtna lands as requested
- Must understand basic federal and state cultural and historical site laws and regulations
- Be a local knowledge resource to Ahtna shareholders, Ahtna villages, and the Land and Resource Department in the Ahtna Region
- Be a technical resource to local Ahtna shareholders and the general public to provide education about the location of Ahtna cultural and historical sites
- Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
- A minimum of one (1) year of progressively responsible work experience that demonstrates the ability to meet core competency requirements.
- Proficient in cultural resource data entry, integration, and cultural site identification
- Driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Minimum age: 21
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associates degree in Land Management or other related field.
- Knowledge and experience with Alaska Native cultures.

Physical Demands
Frequent sitting, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing, and seeing (up close, at a distance, along the periphery, with depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus); walking; bending, pushing, pulling, and standing for up to 4 hours; occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Work performed in a professional office setting utilizing telephone, computer and other office equipment.
Work performed outdoors will include exposure to extreme weather conditions and requires strenuous hiking over arduous terrain and carrying a back pack up to 50 pounds. It will also include patrol and field data collection by car, truck, ATV, boat, snow machine, and/or airplane. Forms of transportation can be bumpy and can cause whole-body vibrations, jarring, and/or awkward movements.
