Description
The Education Mission Coordinator (EMC) is part of the Mission Hub of the Education Department and will report to the Education Mission Manager. The Mission Hub is responsible for creating a passion for lifelong learning while engaging in curriculum based learning experiences such as STEM, social emotional and problem/project based programming. One goal of the Mission Hub is to build relationships with learning institutions in NE Ohio to create innovative instruction paradigms. As part of the Mission Hub, the EMC is responsible for presenting and helping to develop educational programs both on and off zoo grounds, including, but not limited to, grant funded programs, on-grounds programs and tours, virtual programs, and ZooMobile programs. This position will be responsible for maintaining standards-based programming curriculum. The EMC must be able to safely work with and present the Akron Zoo’s animal ambassadors, complete paperwork regarding the use of the animal ambassadors and follow all policies and procedures regarding animal handling and the use of animals for education programs set forth by the Akron Zoo.
It is important that the EMC be able to do a high quality presentation using the zoo’s animal ambassadors, biofacts and visual aids. The EMC must have excellent public speaking skills and be aware of current trends in informal education. The EMC will participate in furthering the educational message of the Akron Zoo.
Requirements
Education
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Environmental Science or related field.
Experience
- Experience 2-3 years’ experience teaching in a formal or informal setting. Animal handling experience preferred.
Abilities
- The EMC must be highly organized, outgoing, collaborative, strategic, independent, fun, creative, self-starter who is able to multi-task within a busy work environment. Must have excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), proven success in teaching, and strong relationship building skills.
Certifications Required
- Licenses Required Valid Ohio driver’s license.
